Description
The Lüneburg water tower, built between 1905 and 1907, is a striking landmark of the town and a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. The tower is 56 metres high and was once the tallest non-ecclesiastical building in Lüneburg's old town. It consists of an 18 metre high square base and a cylindrical superstructure supported by 16 buttresses. Originally used as a water tower, it was decommissioned in the summer of 1986 and the technology inside, apart from the actual water tank, was scrapped. Demolition was rejected due to high costs and the tower was later listed as a historical monument.

Following renovation as part of Expo 2000, the tower was opened to the public as a viewing platform in 2000. It attracts over 100,000 visitors every year and offers a breathtaking view over the city of Lüneburg. The tower can also be used for events such as exhibitions, small concerts and even weddings, with a lift taking guests up to the sixth level. Pupils from the neighbouring secondary school offer guided tours to explain the history and significance of the tower.

This historic structure is not only an example of architectural brilliance, but also symbolises the adaptability of buildings that have taken on different roles in urban life over the decades.
