Description
10. Your Tokota awakes in a body that is not of their own species (human, animal, mythological, anthropomorphic.) While learning to cope with their unfamiliar anatomy, they must find a way to return to their natural self.
Tinsel wakes slowly, her body strangely sore despite the fact she knows she spent the night resting rather than running. When she opens her eyes, the world is odd; rather than the view she is used to, things seem larger and brighter, and Tinsel has never felt small before. Familiar hooves step into view and she’s startled when she has to look up, her head lighter than she’s used to. In fact, everything about her seems lighter, her equilibrium thrown as she startles at the realization and attempts to gain her feet.
Even without her usual weight balance, the sight of hooves where paws should be only succeeds in throwing her off, making her flail until she finds herself landing in an ungainly sprawl in the grass, her companion laughing at her from a few feet away. She tries to growl, to lift a lip the way she would were she in her proper body, but the annoyed bleating that comes out hardly measures up. Tinsel groans and drops her head, only to be nudged gently by her buck companion.
“C’mon, it’s not that bad,” he cajoles, lending her his shoulder when she finally tries to stand again. “You still look like you, mostly,” he tells her, head tilting as he trots around her, curious.
Tinsel sighs, but turns to inspect herself the best she can, though she’s not used enough to the body to really be able to see much. She still has her own colors, but beyond standard hooves, short fur, and large ears, she doesn’t really know what she looks like.
The idea hits after she nearly trips turning in place, and she lifts her head, ears flicking up.
“Oh! The mirror! I’ll be able to see,” she exclaims, delighted at the idea, and takes several shaky steps forward, reminding herself of nothing so much as the young fawn she’d saved previously. What lesson did Aippaq have in mind for this? And how did she get her own body back? Much as Tinsel loved her companion, she didn’t want to be a deer, herself. She liked being a dire, and the shift in world-view was disconcerting; everything was too big, now, whereas usually it was she who was too big.
Once she’s sure she has her hooves under her, she attempts a bound, modeling her movements on her companion’s as he happily shows her how to leap forward, how to move in this new, strange body. Running is still a joy, even though she’s a little terrified she’s going to lose her balance because she can barely feel herself land; she feels too light, too much like she’s not tethered to the world.
Aippaq’s Mirror is beautiful, as ever: full of warm colors that she’s never gotten the full effect of before. Pinks and oranges streak across the sky, reflected brightly in the water below. She and her companion glance at each other only briefly before they leap forwards, disturbing the water with ease, until they’re far enough out that they can stop and look down, their reflections as clear as the sky’s.
“Oh,” Tinsel breathes, staring down at the pale doe looking back at her. She’s never seen her coat painted the colors of the sky, and she looks up at her companion, a grin on her muzzle.
