Description Well - here is my vision of Scott's "Parlor Passage" as he described in his novel "Red Seas under Red Skies":

The tenth hour of the evening. Night fell like a cloak over the Ghostwinds; and the Poison Orchid, under topsails, stood in to the Parlor Passage gilded in white and amber light. A hundred alchemical lanterns had been shaken to life and placed around the ship's entire hull, a few in the rigging but most beneath the rail, casting rippling facets of false fire on the dark water just below.
...
"A quarter less six," called a leadsman.
"Fog coming up," said Jean. He and Locke stood at the starboard rail of the quarterdeck. Drakasha paced nearby, Mumchance had the wheel, and Delmastro stood by the binnacle with a small rack of precision timing glasses.
"That's how it starts," said Mumchance.

If you're interested in the creation process (OK, at least some steps), please have look here:
Passing the Parlor Passage

*marthig
thanks for dropping by from time to time and keeping fingers crossed

And finally thanks to *scott-lynch for writing this smashing scene! (and I'm sorry for not beeing able to insert all hundred and more lights ... )

Thanks a lot and - No problem at all!
I didn't realize that we have a second Locke-Group now here on dA - until now.
I'd really love to join, but I learned that join requests are closed for now. Just note me, when you start to "hire" new members, OK?

How weird they were closed. It should be fixed now.

Not quite ... Now I get the following message: "Sorry, this group is no longer accepting new administrators."
*giggles* dA is a bitch sometimes

how weird.

no administrators.. but you should still become a member then. Right?

I will look into it now.

I am looking into it now and it seems alright. Try again?

Nope, still the same message - although there's no way to tell the system that I want to become a member only.

Hmmm ... maybe we should wait a few moments until the servers are done processing the changes.
Or maybe you can invite me into your group instead?

I can invite you of course, but I have to add ou as a friend first and I can't remember where they hid that Don't worry though, I'll find it..

Jokester! How hard I wished I would be able to work with Poser or DAZ to insert some people into the scene!!!!
But seems I'm too slow-wittet for that.

But there is still hope. As the whole scene still exist as work-in-progress-wireframe-model on my harddrive, maybe someday I'll be able fo fix that point. and to use another ship-model and to figure out, how to get along with those damned lanterns!

Your comments and hints really made me think about another try to get through this passage. Thanks a lot!

No, no, I just meant that I really liked Drakasha and the Orchids. But good idea anyways...

shoughad In reply to EonOrteaShadowmaster [2010-07-25 13:19:27 +0000 UTC]

So did I.
Well, just give me some time (months? years???) to solve this "people-problem". I'll hopefully be back with Drakasha and Mumchance aboard.

EonOrteaShadowmaster In reply to shoughad [2010-07-25 13:25:07 +0000 UTC]

Mumchance? Sorry, I read the Dutch translation. Would that be Drakasha's first mate?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shoughad In reply to EonOrteaShadowmaster [2010-07-25 17:06:35 +0000 UTC]

No, her first mate was Ezri Delmastro. Mumchance was - if I remember right - the helmsman. Or - maybe we both are talking about the same person, but this damned English language with lots of synonyms is playing a joke on us?
How was he called in Dutch?

(I had a lot of fun when talking with ~Sapharya about this little guy from "The Lies of Locke Lamora", who was called Bug in the English and German book, but "Kirppu" in Finnish - and at least reading the best quotes from this book in Finnish .)

Ah, yes, I know who you mean. In Dutch, he was called De Zwijger, or Silent One.

Bug was called Wants in Dutch. That translates to bug as in bedbug.

Nice to find another Locke fan.

Sorry for the longer silence
It's just - I'm not only a Locke fan. I go nuts for playing Neverwinter Nights and writing my own fanfics about that. So I'm very often "lost" somewhere else.

There a a few Locke fans here on dA. But - it's a pity - only a few.

Das sieht unglaublich toll aus! Richtig gruselig! Super Bild auch ohne die restlichen 99 Laternen! Bravooo!

Danke!

Odd unrealistic lighting on the sails but ARTISTIC as all get go!!!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shoughad In reply to sed [2010-07-14 10:45:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot!

The lighting-thing almost killed me - First I tried to stick to the novel and to place about 100 lights. No chance ....

I never expected this - really unrealistic - result, because there now are only 10 small radial lights with only 3% intensity left, placed outside the ship, underneath the rail. If you take a look onto the wire-model here [link]
you might see them. In theory the light simply must not shine upwards and lighten the sails the way it does, but - Hells! - it does! In theory it should shine through the fog, but - Hells once again - it doesn't!!!
So it's either me or Bryce totally misunderstanding the laws of physic. Who knows ...:shhrug:
