The Outlaw-Trail - Holiday Roundup
Previously: The Dressmaker's Shop
"Finally I've found you!"
Summer whirled around; and almost collided with someone, who tried to run into her direction but instead slid on the ice until they stopped in front of her. It was Kate, the town's dressmaker. Summer had already met her - while she had been working for her - and she got along with the lively woman very well, so she was delighted to see her again.
"Wait a second-" The dressmaker gasped and put her hands onto her knees, breathing heavily. "Peaches said you would ride out to the farm of Joel and Abigail...", she puffed and revealed an oblong, flat package at her side. "Would you be so kind and take this with you? It's a Christmas present for Abby, I told you, but I have absolutely no time to give it to her personally - I've got a shit load of work to do, excusemylanguage."
Her monologue was ended by a soft nose of Blueberry, who thought that it would be appropriate to nuzzle Kate's face.
"Of course I'll bring it to her!", Summer laughed.
Business was in full swing, when horse and rider reached the livery barn at the edge of the town. The workers scarcely had enough time to utter a grumpy "evenin'", when Summer carefully explained her desire. Instead of wasting more precious time, one of them just thrusted two lead ropes into the girl's hand. They belonged to two horses that couldn't have been more different from each other - one tiny Shetland, that immediately showed his teeth and a giant splashed Clydesdale.
"This dwarf's name is Adam, an' his "friend"'s called Hoss. Best of luck.", the man said peevishly, and the girl just couldn't find out why he suddenly looked so relieved... With a polite "Gentlemen!", Summer made a curtsey in front of the horses and laughed. The man just eyed her oddly and toddled off.
The two horses should now be brought to Joel's and Abby's ranch, which was located a little out of town, as a gift. Peaches had said that the two weren't only celebrating christmas, but also their first anniversary; and apparently, they had had the same gift idea.
Leading them to their point of destination exposed to be a much more difficult task than initially thought. Adam and Hoss hated each other. From the bottom of their heart, it seemed - and when the Shetland wasn't currently trying to pinch the bid horse's legs, the Clydesdale spooked at some invisible ghosts that were hiding behind every second tree.
After 15 minutes of walking, Summer was at the end of her rope. Her arms were almost dislocated, her whole body was aching and her hands burning; but she indefatigably stepped through the layer of snow, pulling the two animals behind. The only horse that seemed to cooperate was her faithful steed Blue - her head lowered, the mare trotted a bit behind the trio.
"We have reached the middle of our way!", Summer said after some time and glanced at the three horses with raised eyebrows. The horses looked back curiously.
"This won't continue like that."
The girl tried something else - laboriously, she pulled herself into Blueberry's saddle, took Hoss' rope into her right hand, Adam's into her left - and led the Hanoverian mare through the forest, just using her one leg. It was a little bit difficult, because she was obliged to sit in a sidesaddle; but Blue would neigh everytime when the two clowns bugged each other, and so the journey continued without further interruptions. At least it wasn't snowing, but it was slowly getting darker and darker - and the sky was so clear that already the first stars were visible.
Finally, they reached the Cohen's farm house.
"Hello?", the young woman who opened the door, said softly - and was surprised, when actually three horses and a girl with a cardboard box wanted to enter her house.
"Merry Christmas!", Summer said apologetically, grinned and pushed the animals' noses away. "You won't know me... my name is Summer, and... well I'm here to bring you those beauties. And this present from Kate, the dressmaker. Ho, ho, ho." She handed the flat cardboard box to the young woman, smiled and cleared her throat.
"Well, thank you...", the lady of the house, Abby, said shyly and smiled with a blush. She was soon joined by her husband, a lanky young man, and the two left their house to survey the situation.
Joel seemed a little bit overwhelmed by everything, and looked at the horses with a puzzled expression. Their "mistake" was soon revealed and the three laughed at the funny coincidence. The two Cohens giggled the most, and blushed, and almost couldn't stop thanking each other. After that, Joel literally wanted to know everything about the feat of getting the two horses out of the town.
In the meantime, Abby had opened Kate's present and called attention to herself with a sudden squeal. "Oh my!", she exclaimed and her eyes shone in delight."That's wonderful!" She held a long, rose dress in her hands; the same which Summer already had seen while it had been in the making. The latter clapped her hands, and was happy because everyone else was happy, too.
She soon left the couple, and the two clowns they had gifted each other - and while she rode down the street, she said to her mare: "How happy everyone was! Those two are really enviable." Smiling to herself, she signalised Blueberry to canter; and the two disappeared in the dark.
In the whole town, Summer was soon known as "The girl with the horses" - their Christmas Angel, if there ever was one.

(this happens just befoooooore she meets a certain someone. )
My inspiration barely allowed me to work on something else than this, and I LOVE how it came out. x'D It looks exactly like it looked in my mind! xD Blue looks somehow elegant, this funny mare.
I'm so obsessed with this whole event, I just... can't. °-°
Hope that you like it!
