Description This is my very first animated smiley.

I have been inspired by all the wonderful DA smiley makers and give credit to Dutchie17 for giving me the idea seed for my first piece.

I thank the Fool from elsewhere for lending me a hand and showing me how to make them in a tutorial.

Problems. I learned you cannot use a drop shadow from Photoshop as it just leaves an untidy, unattractive white border around the work unless it is displayed on a white background, so I had to give it it's own white background. I will leave the fancy stuff alone until I know how to drive Photoshop better.

Thanks. It was my first attempt at drawing and animating emotes. I feel tempted sometimes to fix the animation but prefer to leave it as the original so I can watch my progress.

I've seen a lot of emotes with arms and fingers and I use them a lot. Just like that one.
This is very clever and I will add it to my collection, if you don't mind.

how do u get them to move?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShoneGold In reply to Allinniya [2007-04-09 02:56:16 +0000 UTC]

I create the artwork in Photoshop and then I link it into ImageReady. This is a program that lets you make image frames one at a time, like on a piece of movie film and automatically joins them together to create the movement.

Here is a link which may interest you. [link]

This is where I learned about making and animating emoticons. [link]

Fool is my hero. I love his work, it is full of soul.

He doesn't make emoticons any more, he has moved on to pixel art work.

Hi Ben,

Gosh you are clever to see I put my little emote up so quickly!

I had noticed all the dear wee little emotes don't have arms or fingers at DA. This is quite a new experience for me with emotes.

Is it a rule here?

I first saw emotes on forums, some years ago and the ones I fell in love with were made by Fool. They were sweet and humorous and this is the arm and fingers I have 'borrowed' from Fool....

Oh look! I found one of Fool's emotes on your DA list....
see, two arms and fingers!

..... I am probably a bit older than most here, so I might be able to give you a hand with a different perspective!

Yes, old emotes had arms...way back when, and there is certainly no rule...its mostly an unwritten rule among the emote community

I wish you luck in your art!

Hi Ben,

With respect I must disagree. The most recent wave of emotes which are causing a stir on forums is the Kolobok style from Aiwan from Russia, his definitely have fingers and are used very effectively.

Swedish born Millan who is held in very high regard as an artist and an emoticonomist, as this is her profession, sells subscriptions to her work and most definitely has arms and fingers in her emotes.

The inhouse emotes from Yahoo have very expressive fingers.

The MSN emotes also have fingers.

Like most art, it is up to the artist's interpretation and what feels right and works for the piece without the fear and control of elitism.

I regard emotes as artworks as much as any other creative artistic endeavor and like all art it should be free to speak for itself in any form.

If it is good, it will stand up to scrutiny in its own right.

If all of a sudden Darkmoon put fingers on her emotes, the beauty would still be there. If Dutchie added arms, his work would still be funny and MisterIngo's work would still be of exceptional quality....and all the others I love but have not named individually would be just as great.

If you create quality, it will hold up with or without fingers and arms.

If I could fave a comment, this one would surely get the star. I'm delighted to see someone so knowledgeable about the genre and so articulate in defense of its evolution beyond normative strictures.

Thank you.

Thank you for your kind comments livius. I have a high regard for the artistic abilities of the emoticonists/emoticonomists, even more so now that I am making them myself.
