You and me---together to the end!"It's an older story, and frankly parts of it don't make a whole lot of sense. But Kenji Miyazawa's "Night on the Galactic Railroad" is one of my favorites, and i've been meaning to make something inspired from it for too long. I referenced both the book and the animation in this illustration, and I highly recommend checking them both out sometime. Just keep the tissues handy.
I mean it. It will make you cry. Buckets.

Oh, wow, this is so beautiful. I've been a fan of both the movie and book for awhile, and I can't believe I haven't seen this picture before. I love how you referenced little events that took place in it, like with the water and the apples. And I believe with the boy (whom I assume is Giovanni?) and the cat is both a call out to the movie and book, very clever of you!

What an awesome coincidence--we sped through this movie (literally) in one Japanese class a few weeks ago. So, I only got to see a few scenes throughout, including the ending, but it seemed like a great story that deserved a closer look. I had forgotten the title, though... so now I can look it up. Much thanks.

Oh my gosh. I can't -ohmygosh. You're one of my favorite artists, and you just made fanart of one of my favorite stories. I love this so, so much, and yes, I'm actually getting a little teary just remembering this story because it is the saddest thing in the way that hurts best. And to mention that actual art, since I got a bit sidetracked, haha; I love love your dreamy coloring, especially those colors in the water, and the way you tie in the starry sky both outside and inside of the train.
