Description The oldest (electric) tram on the Göteborg network, an M1 type motorcar with the road number 15, built in 1902 by the General Swedisch Electric Company and still in working order. The first tram line in Göteborg was established as early as 1879, but was of course operated using horse-drawn cars. It was only in 1902 that electric traction was introduced, with this type being the first one to roam the rails without equine power.

After running for a few years in its original configuration, it was rebuilt as an M4 type, with enclosed cabs, and after a few more years of service, it was used as a trailer rather than a motorcar. Thankfully, this only meant that the drive motors were disengaged, with no equipment being removed. In 1929, piror to the 50th anniversary of the tram network, it was decided that No. 15 should be a museum car, so it was returned to its as-delivered state for the festivities. Afterwards, it was stored for a long time at one of the depots, not emerging until the 100th anniversary of the network in 2002. After another restoration, this car is no longer hidden away in some depot but is out and about during the summer months, serving mainly as a tourist attraction.

It looks a lot like American "Bierney" safety cars.

I'll take your word for it! But early tramcars didn't deviate much from their basic setups, so it sounds reasonable to assume.

Poor guy could've done with some sunglasses, but I guess that would have clashed with his historic outfit.

Yes, he looked like he'd been out in very bright sun for while.
