How sad. Hate to see this, but then some of us would moan if we didn't get new modern trains.

I think most railfans understand that there is a need to modernize, but it always seems like a waste, considering how such engines can still be found in service. [link]

Great job with the trumped up high contrast! She looks really forlorn.

Thanks! I bet she is forlorn all right...

It has to be the worst kind of execution...week after week, inching closer to the workshop, lok by lok until you're staring into the eye of the torch. It's a good thing those locomotives don't actually have souls.

Tell you what, this is exactly what happened to the first engine I dared to climb into, and it was still standing under wire at that time: [link] I was probably the first to board her, and over time, I could watch as the first graffiti "artists" came and smeared their shit onto one side [link] then she was finally pushed into the fenced off area, only to come out again when a transformer occupied the rail [link] I've got several closeups, a cab shot, and a from-the-cab shot, I think this is one of those engines that one can find several times in my gallery. With more and more parts being removed, and the body getting dirtier from the oily rainwater washed down from the roof, I wasn't even there when her time came.

Indeed. It was a lush and sunny day, but seeing all this power about to go to waste prompted me to whip out the editing tools.

The scariest thing was that the other BΓΌgelfalte still had the EBuLa computers installed: [link]
Not only are those expensive, like some other stuff me and a few guys looted, but they actually worked. One of the others flicked the switch on the 110's battery, and it still had enough juice for him to boot up the things while they were still in there. They worked flawlessly... I kinda feel like never paying the DB again, if they throw out so much working and almost new equipment...

man, that IS sad. have it working right in front of you, and you cant roll her away.

Well, the engine was probably not operable any more, at least I don't think it could have been moved under its own power. The scary thing is, the first engine I once climbed into, namely this one [link] was pretty much intact and under wire. So if I'd have done some minor repairs, just screwing some torn out cables back in place, I MIGHT have been able to run the auxiliary compressor from the batteries, if there was any juice left in them. With air pressure at hand, I could have lifted a pantograph, and power up the main compressor, enabling me to disengage the brakes and move the engine, if the power controls are still operable. What's scary about this? Well, I could have rolled out onto the mainline, and cause a huge crash with the next IC or ICE train...

DUDE GO FOR IT, JUST DONT ROLL HER ONTO THE MAINLINE.
see if you can get her down a local track, see if you can hide her in the bushes. XDD
thats what I would have done!

[link] There are only mainlines around here, the engine was parked at an abandoned platform. Actually moving it would of course be a severe criminal offence. Not to mention that I didn't even dare to flick the battery switches... Some cables might already be messed up, and could cause a fire etc.

While I can't sue them for destroying what was once bought by taxpayer money, the could sue me for destroying their property, and disrupting rail traffic. Latter would be the worse of course.

yeah i suppose
man if only you or we could do something.
like, if this happened in a scrapyard with a local line, I would bring aboard a genorator with a transformer assembly, use it to get one engine going, then tow the rest out with it.

You'd need a heck of a generator to power an electric without catenary... A friend and I often fantasized about coming here with a good old soviet six axle diesel in the dead of night and tow the lot, hiding them in the empty halls of the former locomotive workshops (closed down in 2003).

hey, good idea! soviet class 232
but seriously, a transformer wouldnt give you much current, but it would boost the hell out of the voltage from the gen. get like a 5000 Watt industrial house genorator on castor-wheels or skids that can make 240VAC (I have one) and hook it up to an Xfrmer

Considering that the engine has a maximum power output of 3500kW, I don't know whether that would be enough to get it going at slow speed. One would either have to feed the 15kV @ 16Hz to the roof equipment, or directly supply power to the engines. The 143 has a half-automatic traction control, so getting around that might be somewhat awkward. I never tried it though, so who knows... I just know that thundering in with a 232 and pulling them away sounds way cool.
