Well, It covers everything, I think you will need quite a lot of time It must be also adapted to your situation. Here were I live there are no Hurricanes, non sense to prepare myself for them... Also country and city are quite different because you have different advantage/disadvantage...

You asked kindly, so I will gladly answer.
The main problem are the different moods and color-sets of the two grounds. For example, the foreground has a very diffuse, almost passive light source, the background meanwhile has the very bright explosion, also only a few clouds, not enough to cover the sunlight completely.
Based on our knowledge of the horizon, the background also has a rather impossible angle, it looks like you are looking at it from very high above... also with a very wide lens . You could've zoomed in a bit more into the background to fix this one.

Well, those are all rather specific problems, what's rather easy to do and would instantly improve the picture a little, in my opinion, is making the foreground as filled with sepia tones (brown, orange i.e.) as the background.

I hope I'm of any help. Keep up the nice ideas.

this is cool picture and great idea I think, but i would have photoshopped those trees and ground more darker to get more feeling in this picture and also to get it looks more completed/finished. (also i would have tryed to get light from that explosion direction... as u can see that light on those buildings on the background. but as i said idea for this photo is awesome tho... still i think it needs lilbit more modifying to looks even more cool.)

Critics are always welcome It takes me so much time to do this Photomanipulation... I try to answer to your points:
1) trees and ground more darker: This picture was design as a cover for a book and the previous version was too dark in my opinion. I will try to do what you says and see if it's getting better.
2) getting the light from the explosion direction: I have no idea how to do that. Basically, what I was imaging is that this happens in the late evening when it's already dark. This is the reason why the city is almost black. Due to the explosion, the city near the mushroom is not so dark but... well you are right, maybe the part with the trees and the two cops must be darker. The problem is than that, in this case, the main focus of the foto is the explosion and not the two persons and this was not my intention. Mmmmh... I have no idea how to realize what you says... I'm just a Photoshop enthusiast and not a professional
