Description The jaguar is probably the most water-loving of the big cats and is a skilled diver.

This is Panthera lutra, the Riverine Panther or Otter Cat, descendant of the jaguar living perhaps five million years hence that capitalizes on this occasional behavior and makes it a lifestyle. It has become predominately aquatic, hunting fishes, crocodillians, turtles and large aquatic rodents, all of which it catches with powerful arms and retractable claws at the end of long webbed fingers. Swimming is mostly powered by kicks of the powerful hind paws, while the streamlined tail is used to steer.

Though of course, we can only hope that the ancestor of the riverine panther survives the Holocene, lest this creature forever be one of imagination.

Throw a cat in water enough and you'll eventually get a similar streamlined form.

Unfortunately i believe (hopefully) that any future species will be descended from small, opportunistic animals. Everything larger than a house cat will be extinct in under 50 years, the world's ecosystems are in freefall right now and the damage is long done.

That's assuming the current problems pushing towards that problem aren't solved (and believe me, they're definitely solvable. Hard, but solvable)

It would not be that bad as you say, if there will be no greater catastrophe like third world war. In Poland there are wild european bisons living in few national parks. Of course they are controlled and cared by national parks staff and scientists, but their population is big and still growing. Of course it is like culturing nature, but works even for megafauna in densely populated civilized areas.

This is actually very well done. Really love the work you gave to keep the basic anatomy of its ancestor, and not making it a completely unrecognizable creature by the end of it, I see all the traces of the jaguar. Also the concept is cool on its own. Pretty cool.

Or it will evolve from feral domesticated cat. Cat probably will survive holocene on all continents and can easily evolve to replace extinct big predators.
