Description

“You’re late!  See how the sun is already climbing into the sky?  If you want to make it to the Northern Village before nightfall, you must leave now.  Liadan, are you listening to me?”

“Yes, mother!” Liadan rolled her eyes as she put a few last-minute items in her bag.  She should be used to her mother, but it never ceased to amaze her that the woman could always find something to worry about.  Liadan tied back her long, auburn-colored hair, shouldered her bag, and walked swiftly to the door where her mother stood tapping her foot impatiently, holding a cloth-wrapped bundle of food.

“Thank you, mother.”  Liadan kissed her mother on the cheek as she took the food and ran out to the yard where her horse waited for her.  She mounted the chestnut mare and turned out of the yard toward the road to the Northern Village.  She raised her hand to wave and smiled as her mother’s voice followed her, “Now don’t forget to buy two blankets and watch out for the people there.  I have heard nothing good about that Sir Gowen – Lord and Protector, my ass!  See you in a few days!”

As soon as Liadan couldn’t hear her mother’s voice anymore, she took a deep breath and relaxed.  She loved these trips to the Village to by supplies.  It was an opportunity to see the land and meet new people.  She acknowledged her mother’s concern for her safety.  The Northern Village had been handed over to a new Protector since her last visit and the lack of respect shown to him could lead to disregard of the law, especially towards a young girl out riding by herself.  But Liadan’s father had taught his only daughter well, and as she rested her hand on the hilt of the small knife on her belt, she felt no fear.  In fact, she felt a growing sense of excitement and anticipation.  She nudged her horse lightly to speed their progress towards the Northern Village.
