Description Da Vinci Mickey Mouse, 2008
Paper Image - 8 x 5 in
Sculpture - 3 3/4 in square
Paper; Polymer clay

Original image is from "Disney: Legacy Edition Art and Images"

I've been meaning to create a Mickey Mouse figure for a friend of mine for quite some time. Every time I look over the options I would get stalled... there are a million Mickey figures in the world and I didn't want to make just another, let alone a knock off of one...

I personally don't have a lot of love for the mouse.... Tailor Mickey and Sorcerer Mickey about cover my likes of the little rodent. Plus, the whole tail thing becomes complicated as it's so thin and I'm reluctant to use just wire.

So, after finding this image I decided it was the best yet. I don't have to worry about his silly always facing front ears where he'll look strange from certain angles... and I really liked the concept.

Lo and behold Vitruvian Mouse. Once finished it will be a color photo print of the left image, with a resin painted cast of the sculpted mouse over top, framed.

For now all that's left is cleaning it up and working out a few of the lines and depth... then molding in silicone and casting in resin.

you are more then welcome will this be sold through a disney store? or will it be sold on it's own merit?

it shall not be sold at all... pesky copy right and ownership.

Made it on my own as a gift to a good friend. Ended up making a few copies and will be giving them to two good moms for mother's day also. I made the mold and casts due to the fact that I don't trust sculpey and it's aging values. I wanted the thing to live and survive.... everything I ever make out of sculpey either breaks or degrades over time (with the help of cats normally... )

aahhh you know..i hadn't thought of that..i make all mine out of sculpty..how do you go about mold and casts? is there a web site you could point me to?

I really hate sculpey.... bleh.... currently while sitting at my computer I can see several of my works that have been ravaged by the cats. Wonder duck's legs are shattered and his cape is some where. one of the GIRs is destroyed. Yeah, I hate sculpey.

As for where to find out more about this whole molding and casting thing - you can check out this site which is incredible and full of geeks, but well, informative!! I believe you need a membership to play there though, but the information they bring is well worth it. Everything from sculpting to casting to painting, definitely worth it! [link]

Another good site is [link] a few good things there: [link] [link] and [link] careful though, they're pretty image heavy - not sure how fast your internet connection is. Also look up matrix molds and hellboy. there's a really great tutorial on a hellboy bust.

One thing to know though - it cost a lot. As I normally have an issue with - the sculpture needs to be worth the time and money to actually cast. I do a lot of character maquettes of things that aren't mine, as such, I can't really reproduce them and I really shouldn't ever sell them. This is also the reason that I want to work in wax but I haven't found something that I want to cast in wax.

i was always scared of that picture. But now that it's paired with a 3d version, it doesn't look so bad. Awesome work, by the way

Mickey's bloody creepy when he has too many appendages. Trust me. He's been sitting around without the image - and I've cast like 5 of them.... they're wierd as hell!! And thanks!

It's pretty basic colors... I'm good with out of the tube, otherwise I can make brown out of anything!!!

What can I say... my day job (production coordinator here: [link] ) plus working on Blue Sky maquette casts and other various projects as a second job, has kept me quite busy and away from my own things. I did all the work for this so far sitting at my desk and back stage - what I wouldn't have done for a sculpting tool!!!! I had a mechanical pencil and that was about it!!

How have you been? How has the build on the pressure chamber and such gone?

Picture on the chamber in my scraps, and started the moldmaking tutorial [called Beatrixmolds] in scraps too. Busy myself primering and sanding Bea and Amy!
