It would be great to actually give one a good setup. I was a kid when I had mine so they just had a small bowl and nothing to it.

Unfortunately that's how a lot of people keep them. They believe that's fine, when in reality, they need 5 gallons or more (a lot of my friends keep them in gorgeous ten gallon set-ups), filtration, and a heater. I actually keep mine in a 100g container pond set-up on my front porch during the summer. I bring him in for the winter, but they love space and water plants to patrol and lurk in.

Yeah we've all been there. I had one when I was 3. I took it to school with me and all my dumb classmates dumped all the food in the bowl with him. needless to say, he perished that same day. still upset over it.

Poor little guy. It happens.. and I feel it's a parent's responsibility to help teach a kid what would be good and would could be deadly to their animals haha. Kids just don't get it on their own sometimes.

Yes. That's also a problem because parents don't know any better and mostly go on the advice of a pet store employee. And you've probably seen how most of them keep their fish and advertise small containers for them. And of course.. when I was that young there was no internet to research this kind of thing. XD

I feel like parents should do research and know about proper care before getting their kids a pet. Just like anyone should know how to properly care for their animals instead of winging it.

I'm know, I completely agree, but some people just assume a pet store owner should know what they are talking about. and they are right. They should. everyone should do research.
