Tardic light infantry mercenaries of the Last Man Standing company during the Sargos Campaign of the 2440, on the western bank of the Osorio.  The Tardic mercenaries were lightly clad, quick-moving frontiersmen and foot-soldiers. At first these troops where formed by farmers and sheperds originating from the countryside, woods and frontier mountain areas, where the border wars with the Kanovs of the eastern banks of the Osorio and the Barlans made them warlike people. Later, they were employed as mercenaries in Hannian, Dumia, Uslen and northern Zarhuy.

The Last Man Standing Company (Tardic: Companyia d'Últim Home), officially the Magna Societas Postremus Homine, sometimes called the Last Man, was a free company of mercenaries of the Five Kingdoms of the Norwest, mostly composed of Tardic, Cruzeños and Botanian mercenaries.

The Last Man Standing was an infamous company of elite light sword infantry. They were known for a unique tradition: The soldiers of the company did not take wages and any wealth earned through pay or plunder was instead deposited by the Old Man in the Company Chest upon which every man signed onto the Company during the Founding. After the Company was founded, no new soldiers were allowed into the Last Man Standing.

While for tradition it was made up to only 300 men -considered to be the 300 Last Man Standing-, regularly they hired as well auxiliaries -at the top of it's strength, while fighting against the Unlic Emperor of Uslen, they fielded about 7.000 men, between 2.000 riders, 1.000 crossbowmen and 4.000 light infantry-

Through battle and attrition, the company would dwindle from its full complement of the original signatary soldiers and officers, to a mere handful of men, until only one was left. This Last Man Standing would go to the Old Man and the two would at last open the chest. The Old Man would take have of the accumulated wealth and retire, while the Last Man would take his share and use the money to raise and equip a new Company, becoming the new Old Man. Through its long and storied history, the Company was founded again and again. It was known for seeking out the fiercest fighting and the bloodiest battles, little caring for the casualties the company took, for each saw every casualty as one fewer man standing between him and the Company Chest...

Drawing done for Achast for his entry in the contest of : The Forgotten Lands, for his entry of the mercenary company of the Last Man Standing.

Based the equipment of these earlier mercenaries in the famous catalan warriors, the Almogavars.

Love it, they really look like almogavers, also, is tardic just catalan? Because that's fucking sick since i'm catalan then i understand it!

muchisimas gracias!

One of the more amazing mercenary folks I've heard from.  I imagine it might attract quite a few competitive types, the kind that think they must be the greatest fighter out there!  That's part of the appeal, I suppose, as such a group would have few losers--but a lot of desertions and backstabbing?  I'd think that unit cohesion would often be poor?

Thanks Larqven!!

and yes, quite a competence!

-and the less they are left, the less cohesive their units are!
