Description I had to re-create a lot of names of this table, and even created the last rune, 'neΖ€al' for the sound 'Ζ€' ('v' sound).

Old Saxon is a sister-language to Old English spoken in the Netherlands and Northern Germany around the 9th century, it is an almost forgotten language that I want to revive.

For more informations on Anglo-Saxon, Old Saxon, Norse and Gothic runes, see this table: [link]

Is this Medieval-era runes? I'm only proficiently aware of Fuþorc ᚠᚒᚦᚩᚱᚳ

Futhorc is the Old English set of runes, this is a reconstruction of the Old Saxon ones, Old Saxon was the sister language of Old English spoken in the Netherlands and Northern Germany from the 6th century to the 12th when it evolved into Middle Low Saxon. It's the ancestor of some dialects of the Netherlands and Northern Germany (Low German also called Plattdeutsch) and was very close to Old Dutch

I belive the "th" rune should be shown as the "thorn" letter (ΓΎ) and not the "eth" letter (Γ°).

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sewandrere In reply to EtiB [2014-03-10 00:46:12 +0000 UTC]

Not in Old Saxon, in Old English yes though^^Β ΓΎ didn't exist in Old Saxon, they prefered writing 'th' for the unvoiced th-sound, though they used 'Γ°' for the voiced th-sound.

I see, the modern letters as listed aren't the descendants of the runes. Thanks.

There is no Z. Its certainly not in Latin so wonder where that came up from. Lovely layout by the way, very easy to understand

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

sewandrere In reply to AxelDemKakashi [2013-06-08 21:26:37 +0000 UTC]

I think 'Z' comes from Old High German, but it wasn't used in Old Saxon^^ But I don't know where it comes from really^^
Thanks, I loved searching for survivings of runes in Old Saxon and then gather it all and make it

ahh i thought it might have been Germanic but didn't want to say it and be seen as a complete fool LOL.
Yeah the older languages are so poetic and mystic - I study occult languages myself which are fascinating really

Oh in fact I don't know (and now I'm maybe the complete fool xD)!!
Yes I think so, I love occultism and esoterism and find it very interesting^^ Old English and my knowledge of languages sometimes helps (I can tell you 'wicca' means 'wizard' and not 'witch' and it was pronounced 'witcha' yay!!!), especially for runes^^ but what I like most are texts in Old English and other old languages^^ always keepers of a brilliant wisdom^^

I love authors of the old languages like Chaucer. It so beautifully written if a bit difficult to decipher. and yes the magic elements have such good sayings in them

That's funny that some folks are still using some kinds of runes nowadays Makes me glad to see it!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Coeurlregina [2013-05-28 16:40:21 +0000 UTC]

It's funny, because I find a lot of nowadays norwegian in this:

Fehu "cattle" is very similar to "feh" a old way of saying any domesticated animal, usually herbivores like goat, sheep and cattle. Γ‚s "god" as in Asgarding or "ase/Γ¦se". Hagal "Hail" is very similar to "hagl" which is used today. NΓ΄d "need" is very similar to how we spell it today: "nΓΈd". Is "ice" is just the same as today. SΓ΄wol "sun" is not far from "sol". Berk "birch tree" is almost like "bjerk". Man "man" is, you gussed it, "mann". Dag "day" is just the same as today. And stΓͺn "stone" is just one of the two ways to say stone in norwegian: sten and stein.

It's fascinating to see how little the language has actually changed and how similar many of the languages were back then.

Thank you for sharing this with us
