WYLD HUNT WEEK 4 MINI PROMPT: UNPUNCH THE WOUNDED
Story start---------------- 873 words
Mirror was strong, sure. But she greatly preferred to be a backline player.
Chipping off damage with Silver Spoon when the opportunity came, staying out of danger, and fully supporting her teammates. She wasn't a coward, or, she didn't think she was. Part of being a part of a team was playing your role correctly, as she learned in her studies. But there was also a part of her- an old piece, possibly from her past life- that made her particularly fond of the support role.
And boy, do the Busy bees Expedition Committee need it. In her arms was Harlow, and though young folk hadn't taken any serious damage, he was pretty close to getting chewed up by..
By that thing.
Zeek and Vinny, their other teammates, along with the gravekeepers were keeping it busy while Mirror rushed her shaken teammate to shore.
She hated how her silvery hair clung to her face, but that didn't even COMPARE to the gross algae that brushed past her legs and tails.
“Can you stand?” Mirror met Harlow's eye, her gaze was pure concern.
He nodded.
“Show me.”
Mirror watched him stumble from the waves crashing against his legs, but he did seem fine. Maybe she was overthinking it, but she could tell they were exhausted. Everyone was. But the beast was getting weak.. Could they hold out a little longer?
The gray folk felt a tug at her chest. Now wasn't the time to think about her late partners, but still. They also seemed fine when they left her and Seraphine for work, only to never return home. She HAS to learn from that mistake and make sure the Busy Bees have just as many healthy phylacteries as they started with.
“I’ll bring Vinny and Zeek over.” Was all she could mutter. It was a tough decision, but retreat is the best option for them. Would that be a cowardly move? This is the type of work she signed up for, after all. Survival was never guaranteed. Azalhi be damned, Mirror would make sure it would be for the Committee.

A wicked thud followed by a splash could be heard from the heart of the battle, and immediately Mirror rushed in. Harlow is safe. She just has to bring the other two to shore.
The monster gave a furious bellow as its tail thrashed about, knocking folk already struggling to push their heads past the water’s surface back under.
“Mirror!!” There was Vinny. They were kicking through the water, towards an unconscious blue figure.
..Zeek!
Using her long body to her best advantage, and leaving her shovel behind, Mirror held her breath, then dove underwater towards them. Couldn't see a thing in the murky water, but she did feel Vinny’s splashing through the waves. With outstretched paws, Mirror grabbed Zeek's vest, then hooked an arm around his waist before bringing them both to the surface.
“You got him!” Vinny’s sigh of relief sounded from behind them. She held a reflective object in her own hands, Zeek’s glasses. They were cracked and a little bent, but could be repaired. “I've only got a few scrapes but that looks really bad.”
She was referring to the wound on Zeek’s temple, steadily dripping with dark ooze. Yeah. they gotta get outta here quick.
It let out an agonized roar before stomping around in a frenzy, getting way too close to the busy Bees. Mirror swam as fast as she could, with Zeek’s weight on her back and one forepaw to paddle. Vinny (bless their heart) fell behind to cover their backs. The predator seemed busy with everyone else.
It wasn't until they were nearing the shore where Harlow was waiting, offering to take Zeek while Mirror checked up on Vinny- who swore up and down they were fine, but Mirror knew a dislodged shoulder when she saw one.
“You two go on ahead. Vinny, come here.”
“What? Y-you gonna pop it back in??” The nervous stutter did not go unnoticed by Mirror.
“I want to minimize the pain.”
“YOU WILL MAXIMIZE THE PAIN!”
“Just give me your arm.” Mirror rolled her eyes and held her hands out patiently.
Vinny thought to ask Mirror if she's ever "located a dislocated arm", since Mirror was only a pharmacist and not a real doctor, but Mirror was faster. The new pain that flared from Vinny's shoulder made her tumble over. Mirror wasted no time leaning forward to hold Vinny upright, careful not to touch their shoulder.
“You didn’t warn me!”
“Thought you’d chicken out if you anticipated it. Come on before we lose the boys.” Vinny grumbled but obliged, and Mirror took one last look at the bloodbath.
She’d made a terrible decision. Their job- their duty as volunteers was to put unrest souls to rest. In the short amount of time she’d spent training, the Gravekeepers made it clear that this was no job for the weak hearted. Mirror desperately wanted to be a part of that, to play an actual role in Grimsby grove.
But here she was tucking away her team to safety while others were risking it all.
Who was she, to decide when her time was?
Death shouldn't be something to fear as a gravekeeper, and yet..
