Description This is the Mini Cooper S I began a long time ago, finally with some semblance of a texture. Unforunately this render didn't show most of my work which was normal mapping to the grille, number plate and tires but rest assured the next renders will. As it stands the model is around 5,700 tris and the texture is made up of the following:

1024x1024; diffuse, specular, gloss, reflect level
512x512; diffuse, normal, specular, gloss, reflect level
256x256; diffuse, opacity, specular

The interior is yet to be unwrapped or textured and I plan to use another 512x1024 texture for that.

Additionally it is evident that this texture lacks a serious amount of detail and that it is in fact a work in progress. The main changes I am aiming at are figuring out what will replace my 'miscellaneous text' part on the number plate, making a dirty and / or rusted version (that is 3 versions) and ensuring that all are compatible with my current green and white paint schemes which are merely layers in photoshop. I also have to unwrap and texture the interior.

Great model of a great car. I don't know if you're a fan of the newer model Mini but maybe one day you can take a stab at that too. I'd have to say the only thing about this model that makes me cringe are the lamps. Other than that it's top.

Yeah the lamps ended up too low detail and didn't get textured properly so yeah. Not sure if I'll end up doing the new Mini ... not as much of a fan of it as the old one.

Question... if you unwrap a model, is it better to create textures at a higher or lower resolution? I know this should be obvious.... but is there anythin special you have to do to tell the unwrap engine thingy that you are using a big map?

No ... the only difference when unwrapping for a larger or smaller map is the spaces you make between the different objects on your UVW space. If they are too small you get pixels from one side flooding onto the other but this is pretty obvious.

Nope but you might unwrap it slightly differently. A lower res unwrap can often make you want to use tiling textures. For example if you're making a brick building all brick walls could use a repeating texture. While if you're making a character dressed in camouflage you wouldn't have much opportunity for that and you'd want to use a higher res more purposeful texture.

Ok, I think I understand. I guess I was more concerned with the actual maps. I usually make them square, about 568 pixels each way. I was wondering whether using a map of, say, 1024x1024 would be better.

Thanks for yur help.

I like the original model. The new model weighs too much to be as good as the last one. The older ones were great rally cars thanks to their weight, engine and short wheel base.

You're in Oz too? I was thinking I was going to go with a victorian green plate. Something like Victoria the garden state. This would go with my references as they were of my friends mini, who's number of course I'm not going to be keeping accurate
