Ah, no , not so much that Waterhouse was pushing into new regions but just that for me he is a symbol of the previous concept of "an ideal in art making to aim for".
I do love his work and agree it will always have a place in both history of course, and in my own heart but I noticed that...
some galleries really exert a subtle pressure on artists to imitate work of the past because collectors like to think they are upholding some tradition by buying work that recalls it.
There is still today, among collectors, a tendency to adopt the "go with the herd" mentality, and I've had a few great conversations with millionaires who told me flat out that, it is more of a game among them to buy stuff even if they never really hang it. It is reduced to sport.
That's a different conversation about a weird world that runs parallel to the reality most of us experience but I do talk to much as it is.
So, in this image, I wanted to (or felt like I should) demonstrate to that gallery base "Yes, I did learn the older ways, did my time studying traditionally and do appreciate the history that came before me... but am ready to move on into less recognizable images"
Ironically, but happily, the sale of this work pretty much paid for the vehicle repairs. I bet no one asks mechanics to focus on fixing a certain part of a car!
Anyway, thanks for checking it out and you nailed it... sometimes our intuition knows before we know that we know!

Damn,
I thought I knew everything about Waterhouse and his predecessors, but several of your references to his nymphs have me completely confused. You are saying he broke ground with his nymphs, yes ?
Because he depicted them as real flesh and blood individuals ?
By the way,I totally appreciate your kind of post modern explanations of your works. The high level of execution backs up the the words which are always sort of hindsight anyway, are they not?I mean, the intellect always seems just a bit slower than intuition doesn't it ? Dunno, maybe just me...

I am a big fan of the Symbolist/Decadent dudes and this is quite in keeping with the old school mastery of mythic depiction. Exquisite, refreshing beauty...

It is definitely a mix. Heavily inspired by the pre-Raphaelites and symbolically, the destruction of the "old regime" icon s like the Waterhouse's naiads, et al. Not so much a rejection of the past as to say "okay that was then, what now", and all of that more of a personal experience in accepting the traditions of art history but slaying it to some degree so change can be made to move forward.

Thank you, I have something going on with these "mermaid" types of works....they just keep showing up. I think I am just dealing with the past...and the effect of artists like Waterhouse. Glad you stopped by to check it out.

Your work speaks to me in a way... art hasnt really done before. I get this weird soothing feeling in my chest and at the same time it starts beating faster and I feel it down in my thighs. Your Marian is beautiful, not like your abstract work, it's... just beautiful.

The truth is, I live in your closet, sometimes and it is quite possible that I've tried on a few of your clothes.
Hmmm. I've said too much.
But really, I don't think it is conscious but we do tend to move in the same circles. It also helps that I like so much of what you write, it is fluid and powerful.
This image, "Marian" is, on a level, about the destruction of tradition, to a sort. Not destruction in a bad way, more like the "Death " card of the Tarot deck being a symbol for change I would say. The idea is to show the slaying of the metaphor...like Waterhouse's nymphs ... I am effectively talking to the gallery/collector world with this image letting them know that I recognize and respect that tradition, but also will slay (move beyond) its use in the more technologically informed works.
Often artists have to show that they know the "old" ways and have studied the history before they will be accepted in their future endeavors. In that sense, I suppose this work functions quite well.
I do like your writings very much, and it is always so nice to talk with you.

I never really thought of Marian as being a siren, there is that whole I hear you calling across the water across the waves bit. That adds alot more to the song, not that a sister's song really needs any help, but I will never think of it quite the same. She is really beautiful.

It's terribly beautiful, really. The colors work great, the little cut (or geels?, I do get something fish-like from her with those fins and all, it is some form of a mermaid?), and her 'pose'. It's incredible...
