Description
“Get your asses up!”
A belligerent women’s voice echoes through the ship’s interior. Any of the sailors still in their hammocks spring out of bed and pull on proper attire. In an instant the calm containment of the ship’s inner works springs to life. People scuffle all about the ship, hurrying to their posts. The stench of the sweat of hard working men fills the halls. It is the smell of progress for those in the naval fleet. Embracing the stench, a smile forms on Raven’s now black painted lips.
“We have a couple of mutineers to catch.”
Exiting the darkened tunnels of the ship’s interior hallways, Adameria holds her hand up, cup in palm, to cover her eye from the sunlight that pierces down on her early this morning. The disgusting stench is washed out by the salty sea air as she steps out on deck. With her vision adjusting to the change in lighting, Adameria is now able to spot the ship running course just off in the distance. This is their target.
“I take it my fiancé has informed you of this little ruse we have put on.”
The once green clad captain wears a formal black attire today. It is big in appearance, but it commands a presence. However, the green streak in Raven’s hair remains visible and makes her identifiable at all times.
“I may have been informed.”
There is a slight pause as Raven looks troubled and in thought before she speaks to Adameria again. “I see him watching you. He likes you. You are from the Slums as is he, and you’ve built yourself up, which also reminds him of himself. He finds you much more attractive than he finds me, that much is clear to me.” As Raven says this, Adameria hands her the cup she had in hand. Seeing it, Raven takes it, smelling the alcohol masking its contents and quickly gulps down the concoction.
“I have no interest in your fiancé.”
Raven leans against the ship rail. “I know, that’s why I can’t stand it. It is because you pay him no mind, and yet he still wants you, that is what is eating me alive. I have respect for what he has made of himself, his power, the things he is able to do. I’d follow that man to the grave, but he’d rather take the girl who doesn’t give a damn about him instead if he could.”
“I don’t think it is that simple. Men like Boris care about power above all else. I am a threat to his power, and so he is interested in me. But as long as you remain Captain, you are the most powerful bitch here.”
“I take it you’ve seen your fair share of men? I don’t mean that in offense of course. This is just my guess based off of the stories I’ve heard about you.”
A smile forms on Adameria’s face, she can’t resist grinning. “Well, you aren’t wrong.”
There is a small pause between the two women before Adameria turns and asks Raven, “You really love him, don’t you?”
“I do.”
Raven looks down at her drink and finishes off its contents, handing the now emptied cup back to her current companion. “I need to make sure there aren’t any crew members still hiding out below deck. We’re going to need everyone on alert to prevent as many casualties as possible.”
Adameria waits patiently, looking over her shoulder as she watches Raven walk off. Once the Captain is off doing business, Adameria decides to handle some business of her own. The one-eye women heads back below deck, walking back to her bedroom to retrieve something. In her advancement, she halts when no one other than Boris himself approaches her from behind. His words stop her as he leans in next to her and whispers in her ear.
“You did well last night, keeping the Captain busy.”
“It wasn’t exactly a difficult job to pull off.”
“I guess not. Well, not for you anyway.”
Adameria turns to face the bald man. “You have a loyal fiancé, you know.”
“Yes, she serves me well. But Raven’s more of a formality for me. Although she doesn’t look like it at first glance, Raven is an upper-class woman. Those connected to her bloodline have access to riches and power. I’m glad she has devoted herself to me, but I’d certainly take a woman of higher status in an instant if the opportunity came. But I am sure you understand how that goes. You actually understand what it is like to be in my position, doing whatever you can to pull yourself out of poverty. You can relate, because you are just like me.”
“I’d agree that we both are willing to do a great many things to get out of the Slums.”
A smirk grows on Boris’s lips as he leans his face in closer to Adameria, bringing his voice down once more. “You probably have more in common with me, and I with you, than anyone else in this whole damned world. So, if I put power and formalities aside, and chose entirely based on desire, you would be the woman I chose.”
Giving him a sensual smile in return, and bringing her own vocal range down, Adameria responds, “You know, I think a truly powerful man would be able to achieve both his women of formality and desire.”
“Hmm, how about you stay safe in your room here and I’ll check up on you after the scuffle goes down?”
“No need for you to get your hands dirty, there are plenty on deck to handle those mutineers without you.”
“Or we can get our hands dirty down here.”
As Boris inches closer to Adameria, she backs up, feeling for the doorknob to her room. Turning the handle, she opens the door behind her, slipping back into the room, the bald man following her inside. Adameria moves to the dresser located opposite of the bed, her back turned to Boris. With the door clicking shut behind him, Boris removes his coat, his brown eyes never leaving Adameria’s figure as she removes something from the dresser’s drawer. She spins slowly to him, her hands behind her back, a soft grin on her face as she faces him.
“I have something I’ve snuck on here just hoping I could try it out for you.”
Boris moves to her, placing his hands on her body, invading her space. “Planned ahead, just for me? I must have been on your mind for some time.”
“I’ve been waiting to use this since the moment I saw you.”
As Adameria speaks to him in alluring tones, Boris leans in to her face, reaching for a kiss. Only, his lips fail to meet hers. When he’s only inches from her lips, the gang leader feels the sharp edge of the blade pierce his lower back. He pauses for a fraction of a second, in a state of shock. In no time, he snaps out of it, gripping Adameria’s neck in the palm of his hand, trying to squeeze the air out of her throat. She had lured him into her den, where his men could not protect him before she struck. Adameria grips the arm that tries to strangle her, but she does not fight back much. Irritation grabs hold of Boris in his struggle to squeeze. No matter how much force he puts into his grip, he feels his motor control slipping away as he is unable to squeeze tighter, his grip slowly loosening. Next, he loses the support in his knees, causing the man to tumble down to the floor below, struggling to keep his consciousness. Getting a view from his new angle, he can see the crude knife in Adameria’s hand dripping with his blood and mixed with some unknown liquid.
“With a little investment, one can get their hands on some pretty exotic things on the streets of the Slums. The poison in your veins will render you unconscious for the next six hours. Since your poison was inserted directly into your blood stream, its effects will take a hold of you immediately. However, the portion I gave your wife in her drink a while ago will take about an hour after consumption before taking hold of her. Should be long enough for her to finish my fight for me. Then I can bring both ships back to port and take all of the reward for myself. I have to thank you for so generously putting me as second in command, I couldn’t have gotten away with this so easily if it wasn’t for you.”
“Sneaky slut!”
“I meant what I said when I first met you, Boris. ‘Not in your life’. Besides, you said it yourself, we don’t play fair in the Slums.”
This is the last thing Boris hears before slipping unconscious, darkness filling his vision. Rocking soothingly back in forth out on the open sea, Boris would next come to by the side of the passed-out image of his fiancé with him in a tiny wooden life boat stranded out in the middle of the ocean. Sitting himself up, groaning at the stiffness of his back, he would only see the tiny silhouette of the ships sailing away in the distance. Under his breath, Boris would curse Adameria’s name.
Sailing the ships back to the docks, Adameria would make a permanent place for herself in the ranks of the Naval fleet as a major ship Captain. Boris and his wife would return to the Slums, and they would continue to conflict with Adameria to no avail for themselves. During this time, Adameria would put in extra effort to train herself, perfecting her shot and working on a swordsmanship as she picks up guns and swords into her arsenal. Knowing the Green Gang would be on her trail, the new ship Captain would have to keep one foot in front of her enemies. Dedicating every second of free time to further her future, the women expresses an undying dedication to survival and success. In time, her actions become well known across the Bloody docks. Building up a crew of trustworthy sailors to back her up and support her, Adameria eventually is promoted to next in line over Raven as ship Captain. Until, finally, the day comes that Adameria receives the letter indicating that the crew of the Naval Fleet Captain’s ship has slain their Captain and ran. Having prepared for this moment for the past two years, Adameria would sail out with her men for the mutineers and return victorious. Finally, Adameria would achieve what no other person from the Slums had ever achieved, all her hard work had paid off. She would finally be free.
Only, she wasn’t free, as she would soon find out. Enslaved to Master’s will for as long as she remained a part of his militia, Adameria would soon find herself in an all new kind of Hell.
