Research Assistant Log 1

Today was...I'm not even going to mince words today was just crazy! My friend disappeared, then reappeared with a friggin merman tail!  My boss and I found him on the beach with this girl in a witch hat named Aurora and brought him and her back to SLRI facilities to ask questions and figure out what the hell is going on.

Aurora is...umm...not very cooperative with us. She barely tolerates our presence and I tried to make a little small talk with her just to break the ice and all I got was a cold stare. The only reason why she works with us at all is that Sky encourages her not to act like a jerk to us. When we brought her and Sky over to SLRI facilities it was pretty obvious that she wasn't used to being out of water for so long. She was fidgety and nervous in such a strange environment for her, and when we offered her some clothes for modesty she looked at the fabric with a look of utter disdain and refused to put it on. I figured then, that since pulling a wild mermaid like Aurora out of the water was obviously putting her through a lot of stress, I suggested to the boss that we put her and Sky in one of the holding tanks instead. At least then she would be in an environment that simulated the conditions she was used to (1.025 salinity and warm water temperatures). Boss agreed, and when we told Aurora about it she seemed...agreeable to it if only to get back into the water.  So we led them to the backstage mermaid holding tanks to keep the two out of public view, but every single tank had at least one occupant in it. We were worried that Aurora wouldn't be happy with having to share a space with even more strangers but was willing to do so as long as she kept close to Sky.

Boss and I decided that if the two were to meet any of the mermaids at SLRI, the best choice would definitely have to be the mermaid family that the SLRI Research Staff have termed "Seafarer 1" consisting of Thalassa, Noriko Hamasaki, Cindy Hamasaki, and Jessie Bate. Given the unexpected and sudden appearance of Sky and Aurora, we felt that Seafarer 1 would be the best suited to welcoming these strangers to their home away from home.

With that, we let Sky and Aurora into Seafarer 1's tank after having told the group of a new arrival only minutes beforehand. Sky dipped in first with Aurora close behind him. All four members of Seafarer 1 were there to greet them, but we didn't have enough time to tell them exactly how these two (well, one of them specifically) was uhhh...different than the usual. We actually have an audio recording of their reactions listed below:

--------------------------

Thalassa: Well hello newcomer! How are you-(It was at this point Thalassa noticed Sky's gender)-uuuuu what! What in the name of the Goddess!?

Thalassa being a wild mermaid and by far the one most knowledable of mermaids, was absolutley shocked by Sky. She had known many mermaids, seen many births, heard many tales and in none of them was a true merman ever said to exist, only sons that could live and breathe in water but otherwise appeared human. Sky's existance flew in the face of what everything she knew of merfolk and for the first time in my entire time working for SLRI, I saw Thalassa's normally cool and collected vibe shatter into a million pieces at the huge shock that was standing (or swimming I should say) in front of her.

-------------------------

Noriko: What? How? No visible signs of breast tissue, face has distinctively masculine features and the overall build is certainly masculine, but that tail isn't fake either. What are you?

Unlike Thalassa, Noriko wasn't born a mermaid but transformed into one by Thalassa. Prior to being transformed she was actually a scientist and while biology wasn't her specialty (she's an oceanographer), she still knew enough about mermaids to know that mermen weren't a real thing. When she looked at Sky she went full scientist mode trying to figure out what Sky's deal was.

--------------------------

Cindy: Hiya, name's Cindy! These are my moms Thalassa and Noriko, and this is my mate Jessie! What's your guy's names?

Man, there really isn't anyone quicker to make a friend than Cindy is there? Just blew right past the whole "Mythical merman that shouldn't exist" thing and welcomed the two of them in like it was the most normal thing in the world. Part of it might be that Cindy, while technically wild-born, was raised mostly on-land so she's not as attuned to mermaid cultural norms as you'd think, but even then she was super mega chill about the whole thing.

--------------------------

Jessie: Hel-Hello. Ci-Cindy, why is there a man in our tank? I thought boys couldn't be mermaids?

Heh, oh lovable Jessie. She's the sweetest thing ever, but it takes her a while to open up to people. Took me what felt like forever before I could even get her to talk to me. She's especially intimidated by tall men, so the sudden appearance of Sky left her a little wary and clinging close to her lover for comfort.

--------------------------------

Sky tried his best to be as polite and courteous to his hosts as possible, while keeping Aurora as calm and comfortable. Meanwhile Aurora hid behind him and clung tightly to his waist, really annoyed at all these people trying to get near her and her big brother, staring daggers at the mermaids crowding around them. Me personally, I thought it was...pretty damn funny actually. Everybody had such a different reaction to them, and Aurora's angry face kinda looked like puppy trying its best to be scary, points for trying but it's still really cute.

One person didn't seem to think so though. I glanced at boss to see his reaction but what I got instead was...well it kinda put me a bit on edge. He wasn't his usual self, boss ain't exactly a social butterfly, but he was always a nice dude to hang out with and always made sure everyone who worked under him felt appreciated and that any vistor would feel welcome. Right now though, boss wasn't reacting to any of the shenanigans happening in front of him, his gaze was intensely focused purely on Aurora (and only Aurora) with a totally grim face that I've never seen on him before. I was kinda worried so I tapped him on the shoulder.

"Hey boss? You OK there boss?"

His face barely moved as he looked over to answer me.

"Hmm? Yes...yes I'm fine I'm just...thinking is all. You remember what I told you before about that girl?"

I nodded. "Mmhmm."

"And you know that I was in the Navy before I came to work and and was on active deployment, right?"

"Yeah of course boss."

"Yeah well, when we have some time out of earshot of-" Boss gestured directly to Aurora. "-I'll explain."

I'll be honest, when he said that I didn't know what to think. The girl seemed guarded and kinda irratated for sure, but I didn't get any truely bad vibes from her. I trust boss though, and whatever it was he had to say, it clearly couldn't have been good and I was nervously anticipating what his story was.

This is Yuki Hirano, signing out.

--------------------------------

Well this is exciting! This is the very first Mermaid Research Journal not to be written by Arthur, but instead by his assistant Yuki! Yuki will be an important part of this specific arc involving Sky and from now on any research log that specifically involves Sky or the OCs associated with him will be written by her. The regular Mermaid Research Logs, however, will continue to always be written by Arthur. An important distinction between the two that I'll try to make from now on is that Yuki, being a very fun-loving, casual, and chill sorta gal, writes very informally, peppering her speech with slang and curse words and writes more like she's having a conversation with a friend than writing a formal research paper. In contrast, Arthur, being a disciplined and serious former Naval serviceman trying to prove his worth as a scientist, writes like a Wikipedia article. His writing style is very formal, dry, and fact-based, exactly how you expect a research log to be written. I didn't quite pay attention to how Arthur writes before, but from now on that will always be a factor in how I write these journals.
