Scurvypiratehog — Whats Up With The Designs?

Description How come, most cartoons about video games in the 90s, never made the villains look like..how they look? I mean, all the villains had some artwork of them, from the video game makers! So, why did the makers of the cartoons change the designs of the villains in the cartoons? I have heard theories about bowser, but nothing about either robotnik or Wily. Why? was it a rule to make the designs different? It couldn't have been that hard to make the villains look like how they are supposed to. I mean, the animes based on video games, did at least make the designs of the villains right.

I have nothing against the designs in the cartoons, I for example, like Robotnik's design, in both, adventures and Satam, and I also like Bowser's design in the cartoon (Even tough I like the game design better)  but its just something that has been puzzling me.

Bowser belongs to Nintendo.

Robotnik belongs to SEGA

Dr Wily belongs to Capcom.

Maybe. I guess they were trying to make him look stupid, and that's the only way they knew how. Or it's supposed to be ironic, as he prides himself on his intellect, enough though he's a literal pinhead.

I think the idea with Bowser is that he's supposed to be a composite character of Bowser and Wart from Mario 2 since they gave him Wart's minions on the show.

Although I don't know how they came up with the AoStH design for Robotnik? considering that there were no other villains to merge him with back then?

I have no idea either...maybe they thought the original one was too silly?

Or maybe not ridiculous enough in the case of AoStH, but in terms of Satam yeah they probably thought it was too silly. Though not that I outright dislike the Satam design I do feel if one were to try hard enough they could have stuck closer to the classic game design and tweaked it enough to seem more threatening, but that's just me.

Also here's a bit of irony, Satam Robotnik is considered one of the most serious depictions of the character yet has a pretty flamboyant fashion sense compared to the sillier depictions of the character like the modern games and Boom who are dressed in a more formal fashion by comparison.

Oh, I agree. Another thing I find a bit ironic is that with that version the name "Eggman" is never referenced...yet his main base is shaped like a giant egg and he had a robot CHICKEN for a pet. XD

JorDanGo In reply to Scurvypiratehog [2019-10-27 15:03:13 +0000 UTC]

That doesn't compare to Fleetway Robotnik who... Was mutated with a rotten egg, replaced his Ex's with Eggs in his speech (stuff like Excellent=Egg-cellent), had a giant egg dish for a chair, and actually turned into an egg at one point before hatching into the AoStH design... Yet was never called Eggman as far as I know.

Although if Sonic thinks he has trouble with Eggman now, wait until Eggman hatches into his final form... the Chicken Man!

Also an interesting theory I heard is that K.Rool from the Donkey Kong series was in some way inspired by King Koopa from the Super Show, since they're both green reptilian creatures who wear a crown and tend to take on different personas.

Scurvypiratehog In reply to JorDanGo [2019-10-31 19:54:18 +0000 UTC]

perhaps. In the SMB3 cartoon, King Koopa even wore a red cape at one point.

JorDanGo In reply to Scurvypiratehog [2019-10-31 21:32:17 +0000 UTC]

Yeah crazy isn't it. Though personally I like to think of K.Rool's different personas as multiple personalities who K.Rool claims to be his brothers (based on how I think the Brawl trophies accidentally mislabeled Kaptain K.Rool and Baron K. Roolenstein as King K.Rool's brothers). I also like to think that the wife K.Rool mentions having in DKC3 is just another one of his personas where he dresses up as a 50s housewife.

Scurvypiratehog In reply to JorDanGo [2019-11-01 18:26:52 +0000 UTC]

I can believe that. Heck, from the looks of it, Captain Skurvy from The DK series seems to be based on the Kaptain K. rool persona. As well as one of the enemies.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

JorDanGo In reply to Scurvypiratehog [2019-11-01 18:42:29 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I think that was their way of compromising between K.Rool being in his traditional king persona with the Kremlings as a military force while still having the pirate kremlings. Though even though I know you like the character of Skurvy I feel that they could have had Klubba from the game fill the role as leader of a pirate faction of Kremlings but then again they probably wouldn't have been able to make a model for Klubba since they were dealing with early CGI and Motion capture so I guess I'll let that slide.

Though considering how the show was made before Country 3 came out, I wonder how they'd have handled an expy of Baron K.Roolenstien like how they made Scurvy an expy of Kaptain K. Rool?

Back in 1989 before the release of Super Mario Bros 3 on NES, there was only Bowser's sprite from the original Super Mario Bros. So they had to create one from the ground up using SMB1 Bowser's sprite as a reference.  There was a Blue Bowser on the original box art but that was in Japan and Europe.

Scurvypiratehog In reply to Steamerthesteamtrain [2017-12-13 08:43:31 +0000 UTC]

True, but even still, if you look at DIC Koopa, he still looks very different from the sprite from super mario bros on NES.

Koopa DIC doesn't have yellow arms, and he doesn't have that yellow snout/Mouth?

Possibly they played the game, saw Koopa, and probably didn't remember he had an orangish mouth arms and feet.

sonicarchiefan45 In reply to MonsterDobbsREAL [2017-05-21 21:33:36 +0000 UTC]

Well for one the designs are beyond ridiculous and far from the originals, and two, the characters are nothing like the ones from their games. I mean I can understand why they did this because there was not much material to use from the games, so they had to come up with something themselves. Still, it left them to make beyond cheesy cartoons.

You shoud see how Ganondorf/Ganon used to look like in cartoons. He was based on Classic Pig Ganon but he had a really ridiculous voice XD. I think King Koopa was based on the Bowser Sprite from the first NES Mario game. At least it's not a guy in a suit. But yeah, Wily (and Mother Brain in the same cartoon) was weird.

Good comic mate.

The designs look horrible, aside from SatAM Robotnik, DiC make a really cool design for the heartless dictator of Mobius and it's the one I'm using for Robotnik.

But MegaMan, pittt, even the bad box art MegaMan looks better, and even then it's not saying much...

CubieJewelArt [2013-12-28 03:46:22 +0000 UTC]

Great point there! XD

I quiet don't like the cartoon design on then by DIC, I don't know what DIC thinking, I imaging how they got those design in the first place. It that they try to drew like in the game that since the those games back from 90's but it just my theory. Also I don't like the AOSTH (the first american sonic show.) it have too mush cartoony, Don't have details and the look like the Dr. Sues design. I prefer SatAM cause it way better then AOSTH. but still AOSTH is funny though. I didn't see Mario cartoon and MegaMan cartoon show yet. But those designs in the shows made by DIC looks so terrible.

Indeed XD

I see.

Actually, DIC never actually made a Megaman cartoon, but a cartoon called Captain N the game master. In which, megman was one of the main characters, and Dr Wily appeared...and one thing...if nobody called him megaman in that show...you would never even know, it was megaman.
