Elian has come to view his scars, and the blood shed from them, in a more neutral light, if not in a positive one. He still feels responsible for his brothers' deaths, but he knows now - particularly after nearly dying alongside Thirdghost - that there is little he could have done. Blood means weakness, to him. The shedding of blood is simply a reinforcement of his inability to defend those he cares for, and he has come to the belief that there is nothing he can do about it.
