You might be wondering what the hell this is, and you’d be right to do so. It’s actually an entry for Ageaus‘s contest, in which you are to transform one of his characters in to something else. Problem is, the character I chose is a merman, which begged the question, what could I turn a merman in to. Long story short, this is what I came up with. I have to admit, the line art by itself looked better, but it’s against my principles to put up anything without colour. It forces me to improve.

And if you’re wondering whether there’s a story to go with the image, there is. Basically, Aïlthilim, Queen of the Artic Wastes, has declared war on the merfolk. She proves her fame as a brilliant tactician and strategist, and marches her army directly towards the merfolk capital, not giving her enemy any time to organize any real defence. As her armies take over the capital, she personally leads the attack against the palace and engages combat with the king of Aquarius, Ageaus. Well aware of Ageaus reputation as a master of the arcane arts, she uses trickery and deceit to force the king in close combat, where she quickly defeats him. Hoping to further break the moral of the merfolk, she uses a powerful artefact to force Ageaus into servitude and turn him into her personal steed, riding him to war and leading the charges against his own people. That’s the hint of it. I haven’t worked out any details.
