The story of the movie is a bit pathetic. But the special effects were outstanding for this time!
Remember the short sequences where you see the trafic on the road, at monorails and even in the air? It's all done with model vehicules and the stop motion trick. Which means, the camera took just one single frame. Then every object which should move was been moved a little bit by hand. Then another frame was shoot. And so on, till you get the whole take. Just remembers that it needs 24 frames per second for a movie and there are up to 300 (!) objects in some of those sequences! It took months to shoot just short sequences. Especially for this movie the chief FX specialist Eugen SchΓΌfftan developed a new effect which allows to combinate real actors with miniaturized background props. It was used till the blue screen came out. The creating of this robot was made by using double exposures.

Yes it was craftmanship, and takes a lot of time (and money)! Today, most SFX are made by Computers, so it's more common.
Happy new year too!

My dad and I watched this movie a few years ago. Man it was weird! Great rendition of the Maria robot. I love how this really looks like an old poster or lobby card.Β

Really good job potraying the robot. I like the pose and the look, as well as the reflections. I always pictured the robot being gold toned as I watched the movie, even though it's black and white (if that makes any sense...)

I think the red letters are a good choice, it looks more dramatic than white.

I like the reduction of the colours, one thing I would say is that the red is letting it down a little.

I see.
Whenever you impose red over dark colours remember to paint it in white first, that way the red appears vibrant no matter how thin the first coat is.

Awesome! Truly one of the best Silent films ever made ...way ahead of it's time... and the soundtrack (which was added in the 80's) by Giorgio Moroder was equally entertaining
Again I am a big fan of your artistic style and subject choices!

I think Metropolis shows up all the new cgi-filled films. I still love them but some of the stuff in Metropolis is jaw-dropping when you try and think of how they did it. Everything had to be done either on camera or drawn and tweaked pain-stakingly onto the film after. Amazing film. Instantly became my no.1 fav only 10 minutes into it.

THANK YOU! I love robots and the design for this one really stands out--It reminds me a lot of H.R. Giger.
