If you are trying to get better nighttime/low light shots, id recommend using your largest aperture, preferably something in the low 2s or 1s if possible, like f1.8, and no smaller than f2.8. set your shutter speed between 1/60th and 1/100th to reduce blurring (if handheld. if you have a tripod, you can drop the shutter speed below 60 a little, just gotta make your subject hold really still!), and use an ISO of between 1600-3200 , if your camera supports it. and then make use of that Nikon D-lighting if you notice a lot of noise, slow the shutter and drop your ISO a notch.
Despite the exposure, your composition is always excellent, im jealous

See, it's THIS. I need to learn THIS stuff!
I seee the photo in my mind, but the process of making it happen is something I seriously need to educate myself on/work on. XD
THANK YOU FOR THE ADVICE ;A;

im always happy to give tech advice, i just wish i could see the photo in my head like you do, i am pretty good on the camera side, but when it comes to the people side, i really struggle.
play around a lot, and shoot in challenging situations, with bright light, or low light, or weird light, like that spot at the Hyatt, and experiment with as many settings as possible, play with the position of yourself, and your subject, and your light source, if possible. Also, never forget that when you zoom in with that variable aperture 18-55mm lens, you're stepping that aperture down, so keep it zoomed out as much as possible, to let in the most light.

That's how my brain has always worked - it's the same for sound (which I'm going to school for). I can listen and design and mix a show like no other, but if you want me to set up the system or fix a technical problem..yeah no. haha I am the furthest thing from a gear head that can possibly be. :/ I'm trying to work around it, but I find myself struggling a lot with technical information. u___u...
