She'd been running for what felt like days, the branches and plants whipping past her. They sometimes got stuck in her mane and tail, but she didn't care anymore. She just wanted to run.

The Everfree obliges her. It doesn't get in her way, but she felt it around her. It whispered things that she couldn't hear, but the words were soft and caring. She slowed, her exhaustion finally overcoming her desire to run.

She stops in the middle of a small clearing, her eyes towards the ground as she tries to regain her breath. Her eyes well up with tears as she looks towards the ground. Then the tears fall and wet the earth beneath her.

The sound of muffled whispering fills her ears and she looks around for the source. She wants to open her mouth to call out, but all that emerges is a quiet sob as the tears return again. The whispers intensify, beckoning her. She doesn’t know what they say and she can only sense the tone.

She digs one hoof into the soft soil and closes her eyes, listening. The voices grow a bit in volume, but she still can’t make it out.

She digs another hoof deeper into the soil and the voices come through more. She continues with her other hooves As her final hoof enters the soil, the voices are finally loud enough to hear.

They don't say specific words. Instead they fill her ears with an intoxicating music. She sways with it as her mind and heart are filled with a cacophony of emotions and sounds she had never experienced in her life. More tears fall from her closed eyes, but they are a mix of joy and longing.

When the tears mingle with the soil, they cause a small green spark and tiny saplings emerge. The saplings grow quickly and wrap themselves around her fore hoof.

If she notices this, she doesn’t react. Instead she digs her hooves into the dirt even more and the song intensifies. The words start to become clear to her, singing the history of the forest itself. She absorbs it all. Every bit of information filled the once empty hole in her heart.

The saplings continue to move up her leg and reach her cutie mark. There’s a tiny spark and the mark itself begins to grow and bloom. The stems grow down her legs and tail.

She feels this and starts to worry. The voices of the forest whisper a soothing melody and she allows herself to relax. The plants gently move through her fur and root into her skin. It’s not the slightest bit painful, it's almost, empowering. The feeling reaches her shoulders as she feels them taking root there.

The plant grows out of her shoulder and arcs around itself, forming a green, gossamer wing. The sun shines through to the clearing. Her whole body feels warm and her new wings stretch, taking in the light of the sun. A bright, blessed energy fills her and accelerates the growth of the plants around her.

Flowers and buds emerge in her tail and mane. She winces slightly as she feels a new weight on her brow. Antlers grow up and out of her bangs.

All through this, she gives herself to the haunting and beautiful song of the Everfree. It beckons her to leave what she once was behind. She agrees, having nothing to truly leave behind now anyway. The song weaves its way into her mind, replacing and covering memories and thoughts she no longer wants or needs.

She opens her eyes and looks around. The entire forest was open to her now. She knew what was happening in all corners of the forest through the song that now filled her mind. She takes a tentative step forward and stretches her new wings.

Who she used to be doesn't matter. The forest was now a part of her and her of it. The song of the forest was the only sound she heard or felt.

She would let nothing hurt her, or it, again.
