Description Time for another artistic alphabetical foray. I am drawing characters from literary sources every week for AlphaBooks.

U is for Ungoliant. She is a manifestation of evil from the mind of J.R.R. Tolkien. Her name means "dark spider" in the fictional Sindarin language. She is the mother of Shelob, the giant spider from the second book of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Ungoliant herself aided the evil Vala Melkor in his attack upon the Two Trees of Valinor, which brought light to the Land of the Valar in ancient times. She drained them of their sap after Melkor had injured them, so I drew her drooling some light from her maw.

Pencil sketch.
