in an old Hitman comic, it was explained that the yellow oval Bat-symbol is meant to draw gunfire to Batman's chest (which is armor plated), so people wouldn't shoot him in the face.

Like any good comics tidbit, it stayed in my brain... I feel like Bats is asking for trouble without that yellow oval. At night, the brightest parts of his appearance are his eyes and mouth. Like he's just BEGGING to be shot in the face!

I thought it was The Dark Knight Returns... but yeah the reasoning is solid. Anyway I miss it though it's easier to draw without the oval.
