The Visigothic Kingdom, sometimes referred to as the Kingdom of Toulouse after its capital Toulouse, was a kingdom that occupied what is now southwestern France and the Iberian Peninsula from the 5th to the 8th centuries. One of the Germanic successor states to the Western Roman Empire, it was originally created by the settlement of the Visigoths under King Wallia in the province of Aquitaine in southwest France by the Roman government and then extended by conquest over all of the Iberian Peninsula.

In Baetica, the strong Romanization and the strength of a territorial oligarchy in the province, capable of own authentic armies, made Baetica a difficult territory to conquer. It was the last territory controlled by the Visigoths, and the one that presented more political instability. From the year 531 the king Teudis carried out a rapid expansion towards the south, establishing its court in Seville (Hispalis), which were the capital of the province, to have a better control of the rebellious south. But this was not going to last long. The local noble Athanagild and the Byzantine emperor Justinian the Great made an arrangement against the visigothic king Agila to free the Baetica.
