It's a redesign of the original G1 Moondancer. This is her real pony form: [link] , and this is her original box art: [link]
The pony named Moondancer in FiM has actually never made a screen appearance, and it was likely a namedrop, since one of the reasons why Lauren Faust couldn't just use revamped G1 characters was some complicated copyright/name rights issue.

That last one isn't entirely true; Moondancer could have returned in G1 appearance, since her name was kept in Generation 3, thus they had the rights to her name; that's also why Faust could use Applejack and her G1 design, since she returned for Generation 3.
The other 5 ponies she wanted to use weren't renewed for the Generation 3 line, and were lost over the years, and Hasbro wasn't going to waste time and money to renew old names rather than reuse names they already have.
Also, she returned... she used her European design, for some reason, which is the yellow body version... not the North American white version.

Thank you!
I'm glad this drawing has reached out to so many people with so many fond memories of Moondancer. : )

Thats kinda funny that Spike has a crush on Moondancer since she was the inspiration for Twilight Sparkle in the new series.

I think that Twilight Sparkle is more of a direct interpretation of the original Twilight pony, but in the old cartoons they were both portrayed as kind of bookish. : )

Thank you! A lot of people really love Moondancer, and she is pretty cool. I like her color palette a lot. It's a little less...jarring than some of the really early ponies.

"Well, it was a gift 'from' Moondancer..."
The first group of ponies had gifts also, so I wonder where it is assumed Spike likes Moondancer.

It was mostly in the way Spike acted about Moondancer. It's very reminiscent of how he acts around Rarity. Plus it was "for" Moondancer. He was on his way out the door when Twilight bowled him over.
Also, the fact that he had a gift for Moondancer's party when Twilight Sparkle never shows any interest in what the other ponies are doing at least says to me that Spike might have a thing for her.
If you don't agree, that's okay. It's a headcanon, and headcanons don't have to agree.

Hmm, it just sounds like Spike is saying "from" and not "for", lol
I replayed it several times and I get the same result, but I'll take your word for it.

I feel like in the context it might have been Moondancer's birthday, since the box contained a teddy bear. Also, as we've seen with Rarity, Spike goes a little overboard when he wants to impress his crushes.

It'd be awesome if Moondancer popped up in the 80s design.. However they've lost copyrights over that design, so she'd pop up in her G3 design if anything.

Haha, I'm not sure either. Maybe Spike was hanging out with Fluttershy and saw Moondancer coming and dragged her behind the bush. She does look a little confused. XD
