Personality:

Videl is an eccentric, adventurous wood elf with little impulse control when it comes to anything he deems ‘exciting’. He believes it’s best to live for the moment and to just act and hope for the best. Because of this he tends to get into trouble a lot, but lady luck seems to be on his side as the worst he’s managed is a missing arm so far and a number of stories he’ll excitedly tell. Although this may be why the only group willing to hire him is a band of pirates who use him to ‘blow shit up’. While friendly to just about anyone, it’s rather difficult to actually be his friend. He’ll only confide and stand up for people he’s extremely close with. Anyone else will get nothing but twisted truths and tricks for his own amusement. He has a strong fascination with explosives and fire magics.

History:

Videl was born lucky, or so his family always said. Not only did his birth happen on the Day of Keys, but that same day his father’s trading business sealed a deal with a port in Amedra. From that point forward the family lived in moderate wealth, frequently making trips between there and their home in Estraude.

This meant that all of Videl's life he grew up surrounded by sailors of elves and humans alike, although the humans on the ships fascinated him the most. Unlike his family who were all unchanging in appearance and ways, humans were always changing and aging and growing and moving. Despite such short lifespans, they all had stories to tell and were capable of so much. Videl admired them, and as he was still a growing child despite his elven blood, he identified with them most. Thus he spent much of his time trying to be like them.

Within his father's ship, two humans greatly influenced him. First was the ship's gunner. He was a fireball of a personality whom was more than willing to teach the young lad about gunpowder and cannons. Videl even snuck some of it away to make smaller explosions when not on the ship.

The second human was a magic user whom often grumped about his sailing job being temporary. He had bigger dreams of entering a proper school to study under a wizard and become one himself. However despite his own limited knowledge, he had no qualms showing Videl basics.

Videl naturally learned to combine the two together, firing off rough fire magic at little combinations of gunpowder then watching the results take off. Much to his father's disapproval.

As he got older the fascination with explosives stayed which prompted him to attempt a gunner job on another ship as he reached his teens. His father allowed it, seeing it as a chance for Videl to grow up and learn some responsibility working on a ship. Of course, he couldn't be any further from the truth.

While Videl worked underneath another gunner learning the ropes, he stayed about as reckless as ever making dares with the other crew, gambling and betting. If it sounded fun, he'd do it. But somehow he always managed to come out alright. At least until he lost his arm.

While the ship was being loaded up, Videl was playing a bit with his fire magic. Of course, he didn't really know much more than basics of making tiny flames or shooting fire balls. But as he stepped back he happened to trip, accidentally shooting a burst of fire right above a crate being loaded. Consequently, it fell and crushed his arm. This seemed to be the final straw for his employers who fired him for not only wrecking their shipments, but also all his fooling around.

Having one arm took time to adjust to. Not only that, but Videl refused to seek his parent's help. He knew his father would be disappointed, so he hoped to avoid that entirely by finding another job. One that he could do with one arm that involved sailing. Something that he could be completely good at and still have fun.

There was no such thing from what he could find. All ships wanted an able bodied person. Thus Videl was left to find misceleaneaous jobs elsewhere cleaning bars and making small deliveries in the slumier parts of Amedra. But of course Videl was born lucky, which meant things had a way of working out for him.

Being in the darker parts of town meant you met a lot of interesting crowds. One such group was a band of sea pirates, coming to drink their fill and enjoy their first evening back on land. Videl, instead of serving them, asked to join them on the spot. Of course such a proposition was laughable having a one armed bar tender ask to become a pirate, but Videl wasn't one to back down. After they'd cracked a few jokes he simply got up on their table and dramatically told the best story he could about how he took down a dragon with gun powder and fire HOWEVER in the process the beast had torn off his arm yet he still managed to light it up and defeat the foul beast! Of course, no one at the table believed a lick of his story and the owner of the bar fired him for acting out...but oddly enough the pirates took up his offer. Even if he was a useless one armed idiot, he was an entertaining one armed idiot they could probably get some use out of.

Little did they know they gained an actual explosives expert. Despite having only one arm, he knew how to mix up powders which he helped their own gunner with and started trying to make smaller sticks and flares for portable use. With that and his fire magic, he seemed to carve a rather destructive place on the pirate's crew that he's held since.
