Description Something in between working on trades.

A white-necked raven (Corvus albicollis) overlooking a high plain in southern Africa. The border was difficult to decide on. I finally went with a falling tortoise (the ravens drop them on rocks to crack them open) and common tern (Sterna hirundo) eggs; just two things of the white-necked raven's extremely varied diet.

I'm going back to a style I started to work on in 2009 and really liked. I'm surprised it took me this long to make another piece! However, unlike the other two, this one is digital.

Great color palette... really conveys the "dry, sweeping plains" feeling.

White-necked ravens have such doofy big bills. I love it!

OH NICE! I work with a White-necked Raven. Her name's Elle, so when I saw this I was all GIHGALHF ELLE!

I love the coloring, especially on the beak and neck. Also on the chest, when you look close you can see it's just some smudges of gray, but it has a real nice fluffy, feathery texture to it.

That's awesome! I'd love to have one someday, but simply can't afford on right now, nor have the space.

Yea, they are deffinetely messy, and time consuming, and everything in between; including being bottomless pits when it comes to feeding XDDD But they are so worth it, they are so sweet and friendly if raised and trained right!

Maybe someday! I really hope you get the chance!

Was the raven framed? Is it actually tortoise suicide?

FORGIVE ME I COULD NOT RESIST

Great picture. EVERYTHING likes to eat tern eggs! They must be especially delicious or something.

Beautiful! The border is kind of sad, and kind of comical, but overall well done, and of course the raven is exquisite. You know, I was Just watching one of these guys the other day at the zoo. O.o

Lovely!
Though I feel a bit sad for the adorable falling to their death tortoises.

Very awesome!!! I like how much thought you put into the border - and the fact that you managed to make this educational. :3

Very nice Sage! Are you open to acritique on this?

There are a few portions of thepiece I'd like to comment on but I want to know if you are interested first.
I will say that the feathers and shading workon the raven are awesome. (As in deserving of awe.)

Well. It seems to me that the quality of the lines for the raven are far superior to the border lines. It detracts from the over all look inmy opinion. Personally I think that the piece is much better with out the border at the moment.

I think that if you cleaned up the line work a bit and added a bit more shading and the like to the turtles and rocks then it would read as a cohesive piece.

I do think that the over all design benefits fromyour border though so if I had my way I would see you improve on the border work a bit.

As I said before, the raven is amazing. The shading and feather treatments are extremely well done.

So, my opinion of course, and just how I see the piece as it is now. I do think that the over all impact will benefit from the suggestions I laid out though. Not sure where you want to go with the thing though.

Interesting. The border lines are meant to be crude. I think I actually went too detailed on the tortoises and rocks and probably should have kept them more simple. The blue jay ([link] ) and horned lizard ([link] ) have much cruder/simpler borders. The border is meant to be more symbolic than contributing to the central image. The animal is supposed to have the most attention, then simple background, and crude border with a main color.

I wonder if it would be best not to "outline" the border elements.

It is definitely true that I struggled with this border.

I wasn't trying to comment on the quality or intent of the border. I was just trying to say that the level of quality was different between the border and the bird. I think you can get a rough look. However I think the issue I have is that the border LOOKS like you spent less time on it. (Note I am not saying that you did by any means!)

I do like the idea that the border would be rougher. However I don't think it's my place to say anything on intent. It is your piece.

I think you are correct in thinking that there is too much done one the rocks and turtles. Maybe just a hint of shading? Not sure there.

I think you could fix the line work by making it look sketchy. Right now it seems to almost be pixelated? I think perhaps the line weight is a bit strong too. But that is definately personal preference there, so take that with a grain of salt.

Finally, I hope that I am not coming across as pedantic. I truely just want to help and if my comments aren't then please let me know. I do not want to hurt your feelings and I hope you understand that I think the piece is great.

Best,
Bugz
