You're brave to get that close to an emerald tree boa with a 60mm lens. They have the longest teeth of any non-venomous snake. :u

I'm not too keen on the lighting, but that's what you have to work with when you're at the zoo. But I love the way you captured the water droplets on him, really brings out this scales. (:

by JenFruzz
So many people love photographs of animals. From a begging puppy to the intense gaze of a tiger, there's something beautiful and grabbing about domestic and wildlife portraiture. If you have spent much time in the animal-related photography galleries, you know the rate of submissions is pretty fast. There is a constant influx of new work being submitted all day, every day. Many photographers starting out in this arena often wonder how they can make their animal photography stand out in the crowd. Check out these two helpful hints to add some flairΒ to your animal photography!
The Rule of Thirds and Depth of Field:
We often see portraits of animals where the subject is placed directly in the center of the frame and everything is in focus. While this may seem organized and tidy to the photographer, the viewer may scroll past this without really seeing it. Using theΒ , which was in my inbox, just after I saw your work.

My R0,02 on this image:
The zoo lighting is clearly artificial, and quite close, giving a harsh, cold light that drops off un-naturally quickly from the left to right. I think here, you would be allowed to adjust colour balance, and warm it a little. Also, adding a mask that darkens the left, and gradually gets lighter to the right would counter the un-even 'natural' light.
Your focus here is pin-sharp and in the right place, and at f7.1, I would have thought you would get more of the snake in focus - might have been worth bracketing the f-stop a little?

When in this close, personally, I would like to see the eye open - it could make this into a seriously creepy shot! That might require more time than you had to wait for the blink, but animal photography is about 98% patience, I think!

And one last quick comment - if you can, try to give some identifying information on the snake - the name, the home area, etc - always generates a little more interest. Even if you guess wronly, on dA, you will normally get a very polite and gentle correction (certainly my experience).

But for all that, you have captured a bundle of danger here!
