The First Order seems much more warlike and destructive than the more bureaucratic Empire.

True but it's also maybe added to the fact that the members seems quite young and totally brainwashed and it's seems that the First Order is an organization really military-based and sterilized of contact with the other group in the galaxy.
Hux is also totally ruthless .I mean come on, the guy give the order to annhiliate like 4-5 planets only because he suspects that some members of the Senate fund the New Resistance. Hux is problably one the characters who caused one of the highest kill rate in all the saga. For him, it's the right thing to do, showing the power and impact of a total indoctrination.

Something about the way he gave his speech on Starkiller Base, with such anger and passion, says to me that there is more to his devotion to the First Order's objective to annihilate the New Republic.
Maybe, his parents, who were Imperial Officers, were killed by Rebel Forces.

I have read that his father was indeed an high ranked officer and the commander of the Arkanis Imperial Academy but they had to go in exile after the battle of Endor. Maybe the fact that they have to run away from the New Republic fueled his hate. We also don't know in what state is the New Republic. Maybe a lot of problems emerged after the fall of the Empire, frustrating Hux even more. We also know that he fears individuality so...
