Ruddy Ducks are small diving ducks. They are very awkward flyers, and always seem to have a hard time taking off. In its breeding plumage, the male's bill is bright blue. Add the awesome golden water from fall foliage and great evening light, and this was a fun subject to photograph.Jamaica Pond

Wow, didn't know ruddy ducks occurred naturally in the northeast! I saw some today at the Monterey Bay Aquarium... they seem very awkward on land as well! And they have such small wings...

Ruddy Ducks in the U.K. are mostly escapees from collections which have bred wild, and unfortunately they have recently been culled because they interbreed with endangered White Headed Ducks in mainland Europe and dilute their population. Sad but arguably necessary. Unlikely I will ever see this wonderful image here again.
