QWERTY keyboards are from typewriters. the most common letters on a QWERTY keyboard are placed far apart. this is because on a typewriter, if two letter-stamper things moved towards the paper at the same time, they would often get jammed together. so the common letters are further apart to make this occur less often.
people got used to it, and it carried on to computers. there's also the DVORAK keyboard, i think that has the common letters near eachother or something.
