I don't think you use to much screen tone per se. I think you need a wider range in your gray scale than you have and maybe look at patterned tones rather than just shades, contrast is the issue. Just my best guess.

I don't use tones but I do a lot of hatching and at times have had similar problems with things greying out or getting muddy as it were. Glad to have been of use.
