"Little Rommo attended Yia's classes as one of them, until shortly after his eighth birthday, when he began to show great gifts for Alteration, especially of the earth.

A few months later it became clear that his gift was far superior to that of his mother. They had gone to visit a farmer friend who had hurt his back. He complained bitterly about his misfortune as the planting season was imminent and he was in no condition to work. While his parents talked to the unfortunate man, Tovar walked away to climb a small knoll from which he could see most of the two hectares of land. He made several gestures with his hands, as if painting up and down on an invisible canvas, and returned to the house. The entire plot had been laid out with absolutely perfect planting ditches.

The next day, Yia and Rommo set out on the journey to the Great Library, where the little boy was admitted without having to undergo any prior testing. At only twelve years of age, he had already received the title of alterator.

He chose to remain in Coína, where he continued his apprenticeship for many years until he became an Erudite, one of the most powerful and respected in the Order for his skill, tenacity, discipline, wisdom and teaching ability. He trained dozens of students, contributed great advances to the manuscripts of the Great Library and, like his mother, traveled the length and breadth of Haera. From Baluarte to Fîra, from Rocky to Jen, where he met Ténera's son, trying to keep his rag doll from falling into the fire. It seemed as if whole lifetimes had passed."
