This was supposed to be posted as soon as I got back from my Christmas contract but DA was being an asshole with not letting me log back in.
2019 art overview. Chose not to do this in the traditional month format since I work out of the country and I didn’t draw over those periods. Instead, I focused on drawings that show how my style shifted over the year as I was experimenting so some months have been doubled up.
Recent art: The bottom right 2 drawings are how my style currently looks.
Overview: I started to play with colour a bit but style frustrated me a lot last year so I was more interested in getting that down.
2020 goals: Now I’m where I want to be, for 2020 I’m going back to the fundamentals.
I will be focusing on anatomy/gesture with the goal of varying up my poses; one thing I’ve always struggled with is thinking up poses to draw along with trying to convey body language/personality in a pose. I’m also working on figuring out clothing folds and practicing consistency.
Spring clean: I am intending to move all 2019 and earlier art to scraps, I want my gallery to be for art in my current style but for the time being want to keep older art up to track improvement. I'm going to want to delete all older stuff when I have enough drawings in my current style.
Changes: I'm going to start submitting stuff in small dumps so I'll post less frequently but will have more to show for it.
I've always felt like my art gets same-y after a while, it is in part due to my aforementioned issue with posing which I'm working on but lately I've been finding compiling art into dumps helps me feel less guilty about that.
Other 2020 projects:
Plot research: I’m intending to get a good chunk of research down before I go to uni. I'm focused on WW2 and WW1 plots since those time periods are my main niches. I'd like to get my Age of Sail research done or at least partially researched but I don't think it's a realistic goal.
I'm making good headway with my WW2 plot having recently completed the longest and most time consuming section of it.
My sci-fi plot doesn't need any research, what needs researching is already done. I simply need to tidy it up and make a hard copy of my notes.
Plot development: I'm also starting to work on developing plots individually, I'm about a third of the way through planning for my sci-fi and WW2 plots. I tend to bounce around within a timeline and I constantly pick at things so it helps me to have a rough timeline of events to follow for consistency's sake. I tend to keep a lot of stuff in my head because I can't find the words to get it into a fic or a bullet point headcanon so I easily forget what I have and haven't covered as well as what just needs tidying. It's good to have a rough plan to follow in that regard, too.
Language learning: I wanna pick up learning German again. I think when I tried to learn it the past 2 years I wasn't being smart with the process so I'm still at A1 (entry level beginner) level. Vocab's always come easy to me but German grammar - who's she?
Career: I don't think I've mentioned it here yet but I finally got a cadetship offer with my first choice sponsor which means I can progress my career in the merchant navy to my dream job and start training as navigation officer. It's come at the right time because I'm starting to become seriously disenchanted and burnt out with my current job. I start the course (HND Nautical Science) this September, provided I pass a math re-sit.
I'm not sure how much this will impact my ability to draw. I did pick up an iPad Pro in a Black Friday sale so I can draw on the go and when I'm on ship though it does mean I need to get used to drawing in procreate which may take a bit of time.
Disclaimer: Historical plots focus on the psychological impact of war and are written from an anti-war POV. All are researched and taken seriously but there may be some mistakes.
