Description Gel pen, Bic pens on drawing paper. 11" X 14" ... 8/2002 in Los Angeles

This is a drawing of my friend "Jeff". I call him "WHEELYBOY" because he's quadriplegic and gets around in a wheel chair. I called him that one day several years ago when we were drinking and playing around, and the name stuck. Now, almost everyone calls him wheelyboy. He's proud of the name. He embraces the nickname and he embraces life more than most. He does not waste time complaining because he has WAY more things he could complain about than most of us. He was involved in an auto accident at the age of 16. Liquor and high speeds were involved. He was a passenger in the back seat. The others in the car all died.

I can never tell, nor can I imagine, what this poor kid went through. He was active in sports and very "active" in high school. Then in a moment, his life became something he never expected.

I'm proud to know WHEELYBOY. He plays that game called "MURDER BALL", a rough form of rugby played by quads and other disabled, (or "KRYPLS" as he calls them). There is now a movie out about the players and this game. I don't know that I could have found the courage that WHEELYBOY has found to live his life. He constantly amazes me with the things that he dose. Constantly going on trips, (He was a judge at the "CANNABIS CUP" in Amsterdam a few years ago, and appeared on the cover of "HIGH TIMES" magazine. There's to much to tell. The guy can not even move his hands and yet he lives life more fully than I.

So, I drew his portrait here, which is more a "psycho - characterization" of him I suppose - He likes it.

He inspires courage in me. With all my little bitching about "my problems" ... I should think twice before I whine, "OH POOR ME!" I think about this guy who is one strong motherfuker.

He is a friend, and I don't have many.

Once again, you hold such truth, it can be painful, but few can hold on to it at all.

May your brain cells come alive and multiply geometrically.

theres so much going on in this picture and you capture it all without making it seem crowded, and even with a lack of color!! i love his eyes, the thing crawling into them and all the spikes driven into his tongue, the thing dripping into a cup, how the wheels look so tiny and weak yet support the whole body and everything going on. the hooks pulling at him are awesome. the little leg stumps with the bone sticking out... brilliant picture.

i guess quadriplegic would be a nightmare for most, but most are just plain stupid, couldn't do a thing with their greys. we are all so stupidly vulnerable that is stupid to victimize any human being. the draw is super, you've captured very well the visible part of those emotional edges, you're good at that. and you inspire me much.
