On April 5th, 2019, Japanese musician Wowaka died at the age of 31 of acute heart failure. Wowaka was an incredibly influential artist in the Vocaloid fandom and wrote several songs that have become classics, among them being Rolling Girl, World's End Dancehall, Two-Faced Lovers and Unhappy Refrain. His songs were deep, heavy, beautiful, and carried with them many different interpretations of the stories they portrayed. Wowaka's influence on the Vocaloid community is something that will never be lost. Growing up, Rolling Girl and World's End Dancehall both brought me comfort, as I could relate quite a lot to them. One song was rather bleak, being about a girl trying and trying nonstop as hard as she could until she doesn't have the strength to go on. The other, while also sometimes interpreted as being bleak, was interpreted by many - including my 12-year-old self - to be about two girls refusing to let the cruelty of the world suffocate them, stepping out of the repetitive rhythm of pettiness and bullying and dancing to their own beat. Wowaka's music encouraged me to pull through For that, I'll be forever grateful, as will other members of the Vocaloid community and members yet to arrive.
