I actually saw that episode. It was actually rather good in my opinion, even though Poor Paxton set off on a wild Goose chase because of something he somehow convinced Thomas into doing.

I have a theory to explain why the Class 08 shunters (and derivatives) of Sodor could be so fast: since they're all used for more than just shunting, they were fitted with a gearbox that allowed them to go faster, pull short-to-medium sized goods trains, and travel quite fast as light engines. It's like switching between gears on a car, but more like on an old bicycle in relative proportions:
- "Shunting" gear: high tractive effort, but low top speed (the original top speed of the class at 15 mph (24 km/h), or 20 mph (32 km/h).
- "Delivery/Train" gear: somewhat lower tractive effort, but with higher top speed at 27.5 mph (44.3 km/h) (top speed of all later Class 08 derivatives, from Class 09s to Class 12s (with the exception of the Class 11s, which originated from the L.M.S.)
- "Travelling/Cruising/Light engine" gear: lowest tractive effort, with the highest top speed of about 40 mph (64 km/h).

I concur on the engine crew. It feels, most of the time, like they're not even present. A cursory bit of commentary from them now and then would be satisfactory. I mean doesn't it stand to reason that an engine's crew would have a relationship with the engine themselves and/or take at least a shred of precedence in their day to day lives and decisions?

Yeah, I wish we could at least HEAR from the crew. It'd maybe make for some good humor. Like maybe Thomas's driver felt like goofing off with his engine.
