Description
Meriva hopped out of the silver Dodge charger, dropping her keys into her front pockets. She wore a black pantsuit open over a satin pink corset top, lightly messed blond hair falling in front of her shoulders. Dark glasses snapped off her face, Meriva pinching the shades to the pen pocket of her suit as she made her way up the steps to the adoption center.
“Hi, welcome to Holly Creek Shelter!” A cheery young woman in a dark green hijab waved to Meriva at the counter. “I’m Wendy. How can I help you?”
“Right…” Meriva nodded to herself, scoping out the shelter’s reception area, its various empty seats and framed photos of smiling pets. A few of the pictures had owners who looked suspiciously similar to the animals they were posing with. “Anway…” She moved to the counter, setting her wallet down besides the plexiglass sneeze guard window in front of Wendy. “I’m here to get a dog.”
“Ok! Did you have an adoption appointment today?”
Meriva shook her head, a few strands of hair tossing over her back. “No. I saw you take walk-ins. I don’t have much time, so if there’s a wait, I’ll just come back later.”
“Oh no no miss, you came at a good time. You’re interested in adopting a dog today?”
“Mmh. That’s the idea.” She scratched at the side of her head in idle annoyance at repeating herself.
“Great. Before we start, I’ll let you know there is a $100 adoption fee. Now, any idea what breed?” Wendy tried to smile even wider, beginning to see this customer was more no-nonsense than the usual excited young couple getting their first puppy.
“Not really. What do you recommend?”
“Oh.” She had to think for a moment. “Maybe you can tell me more about your expectations, and your living arrangements? Any children or partners?”
Mervia twisted her lip slightly. “I live alone now. Had a boyfriend but he couldn’t keep pace.”
“Oh, sorry to hear that miss.”
She shrugged off the apology. “Eh. No big loss, he was starting to weigh me down. But I can’t say I don’t miss the company. Basically, I’m looking for a replacement. More high energy though, I don’t like to stay cooped up.”
“I see.” Wendy nodded, slowly building a mental list of dogs she might recommend. “What do you do for a living?”
“Athletic trainer. Bit of a fitness nut, always have been. Oh and I don’t like small dogs, the kind that bark a lot?”
“Alright.” The list narrowed down further. “Are you ok with some shedding?”
“That’s fine, I have house cleaners.”
“Great!” Wendy clasped her hands. “How about a golden retriever?” She pulled down one of the paper printouts clipped above her, laying it out on the counter between them. “This is Roger, he’s 2 years old and he has a lot of energy, very obedient, loves to play. He’ll definitely be able to keep up with you.”
“Mmmm…” Mervia poked at the dog’s picture on the printout. “Aren’t golden retrievers a little, you know, generic? Maybe something more interesting?”
“They’re a dependable and beloved breed for a reason miss.” Wendy didn’t miss a beat now that she had the match in mind. “Can I bring him out to meet you?”
“Sure.” She shrugged again, swinging back around to one of the empty seat as Wendy left to the back of the shelter and brought out Roger on a bright orange harness. The golden retriever panted happily, his curled tail wagging eagerly as he pulled on the leash to scamper towards Mervia as soon as he was through the door.
“Ha.” Mervia stayed in her seat but straightened her back as the dog licked the back of her hand. Contrary to her earlier stoic front, it took surprisingly little affection to break her into a smile. “Yeah, really cute.” Finished with his little informal greeting, Roger sat down in front of Mervia, resting his head on her legs as she continued to examine him by petting over his soft golden straw fur.
Wendy stepped back, hands folded to her side. Roger was such a sweet dog, but apparently he’d failed service dog training due to being too excitable and demanded a bit more attention than most families could manage and unruly young children made him agitated. “He’ll be a good deal more expensive to adopt because of his training.” She had a feeling that Mervia wouldn’t mind that part very much.
“That’s fine. Can I take him outside for a run?” At the mention of the R word, Roger’s paws shifted on the ground, ears lifting up slightly and tail beating against the floor, though miraculously he stayed sitting. Meriva grinned at the canine’s neatly contained exuberance, scratching him under the chin. “Ooo somebody is excited.”
“Um, we’d prefer if you kept in doors for now.”
“Fine.” She laughed quietly. “Looks like we’ll have to wait.” Roger gave a soft bark, almost as if agreeing with her. “Must be a smart boy too. He’s perfect.”
“Wonderful, I’ll bring you out the paperwork to finish the adoption process. You can just stay here with Roger and keep getting to know each other better.” Wendy spun around to return to the counter, stopping in her tracks and giving Meriva a second glance. “Actually, would you be interested in our Matching Tails program?”
“Huh. What’s that, haven’t heard of it.”
“Well, for an additional fee, it’s a genetic enhancement treatment that allows owners to form better, more lasting bonds with their pets. The program is still relatively new, but we have research that shows it can increase your pet’s lifespan by up to 5 years, as well as allowing you a deeper understanding of your pet’s needs.”
“Huh.” Mervia raised an eyebrow, continuing to scratch Roger behind his neck. “Are that what these pictures are about?” She pointed to a nearby photograph of a black woman hugging a rottweiler, her face stretched into a muzzle with folded ears poking through her fizzy hair.
“Yes, we like to do a little photoshoot with all our Matching Tails participants. The process uses a sample of your pet’s DNA, so your body may be slightly altered to match their appearance. The process is fully reversable after about two years, but owners report benefits such as increased energy, more endurance, faster reflexes, and…” She winced at almost leaving that last part in. “And some other benefits.”
“Hmmmm.” Roger looked up at Mervia, hopping back on all fours to shake their fur loose a little. “Are there any downsides?”
“Well, besides changing your appearance, largely no, though we have had some participants with partners who report their loved ones developing a… um…” Wendy looked askew. “A higher sex drive. Apparently it’s difficult to manage for some… I haven’t heard any complaints like that from the participants themselves though.”
“I don’t think I’d mind that change at all.” Mervia mused. “Sure. Can it be done today?” She glanced at her wristwatch. “I only have about 10 more minutes to spare.”
“Yes, let me just get you the paperwork for the adoption first and then I can give you the Matching Tails serum.”
“Sounds good. Do I get my photo added to the wall?”
“Oh umm, I think our usual photographer isn’t here today, but I could try something informal since you said you’re short on time. Or we can have you come back?” Mervia waved her off like it wasn’t that big of a deal to her and Wendy bolted back to get the documentation. When she returned to the lobby, Roger had both paws up in Mervia’s lap, trading slobbery kisses with the woman who’d entered the adoption center with such a fierce attitude just minutes ago. “Here is everything we need you to sign. This is the Matching Tales serum. Usually only takes a few minutes to feel the results. I’ll process the fees for the adoption while you change and then I’ll be back with your receipt and a camera.” Saying all that as fast as she could, Wendy wiped some sweat off her brow.
“Great.” Taking the serum in one hand and a pen in the other, she filled out her information against a clipboard in her lap while Roger looked on curiously at why everyone was in such a rush all of a sudden. “Here you go.” Mervia passed Wendy the clipboard and turned her attention to the swirling green in the serum’s neat glass vial. “So, I just drink this?”
Wendy nodded, flipping through the papers to make sure every dotted line was signed. “That’s right. Were you paying by card?”
“Sure, that sounds easiest.” She handed her Visa to the employee and then downed the green fluid. “Egh, that’s horridly bitter.” Tastes like pond water with the scent of bleach and peppermint bark. ”I don’t suppose I could get some water to wash it down with?”
“I can bring you a cup, sorry miss I’ll just be a moment to run this up front.” Grabbing the card, Wendy hurried herself to the counter to process the transaction, eyes bouncing back to where Mervia was still coughing in her seat. She didn’t want to miss the changes. Springing back into the lobby with a small waxy paper cup half filled with water, she stopped to clutch her chest as she noticed the dark brown color overtaking Mervia’s nose. “O-oh, your nose…”
“Hmm?” Mervia touched the tip of her nose, feeling her nostrils twitch and grow damp. “How odd…”
Wendy cocked her head curiously. “How does it feel?”
“I don’t know yet. Something in my face, its… “ Roger barked excitedly as Mervia stroked along her jaw. Her mouth felt soft and pliable, like her mandible was made of cold clay, ready to roll into a new shape. “It’s alright boy.” She scratched behind Roger’s ears again to quiet him, her own ears burning for a good itch. “Oh phsi so stramge.” The changes moved through her lips, curling up with a thick black rubber texture, Mervia almost choaking on her words when her tongue quickly blew up fat and long in her mouth. She couldn’t help but to let it stick out, stroking underside her chin as her jaws cracked to accommodate the slobbering pink licker.
Roger whimpered in her lap between panting breaths of his own, black dog eyes blinking with a curiosity only matched by Wendy’s wide stare. “Your muzzle!” Water spilled against her wrist as she felt her hand trembling to hold the cup, her other fingers moving indiscreetly to the folds of her skirt. She couldn’t remember when watching the changes became such a turn on for her, nor could she really explain it.
“Muuzel?” So that’s what that was, her face stretching out between her eyes. Mervia took in a deep breath through her nose, the crackled nostril folds curling up to catch more scents than a human could dream of, building its path on a boney ramp to meet her upper lips. “Gghhrrr…” The trainer squeezed her eyes shut, growling with throaty reverberations while her teeth turned jagged, and her entire face stretched forward. Wendy liked to imagine the feeling was incredibly pleasurable, but she had the tact not to ask Mervia any more pressing questions while they were right in the thick of things. Instead, she stepped behind them slightly, dropping her hands over the woman’s ears and began scratching up behind her neck. A coat of golden fur moved along Mervia’s chest, drawn to her ears with the siren song of Wendy’s fingertips.
“RRhhggnn, y-yyeah…” Mervia gave a raspy murmur, stretching out her canine tongue to explore the blunt tip of her snout. Her nose was slitted and damp, snorting salty grunts as she licked over it. Roger barked again, complimenting Mervia on how good she looked with a nice doggy muzzle. “RrRrrh…. Rrruughf!” She woofed back, at first clenching her sharp teeth into a smile and then letting her mouth hang open more comfortably.
“Your first bark! Congratulations miss!” It took most people a while to sound so convincing, which meant Mervia must have been natural. She’d leaned her head back further into Wendy’s grip, letting the younger woman’s fingers pinch and tease out her ears into floppy labrador-like folds, the dark blond fur coating mixing nicely with Mervia hair.
“RRooofh. Mmm, oh that feels amaaazing!” She did a little whine as Wendy took her hands away, letting Mervia shake her head vigorously and feel the flapping of her new lopped ears. Roger was barking up a storm at her hips, bouncing their paws against Mervia’s kneecaps. Somehow, she could read the acute notes of joy in their sounds, happy to see their new owner looking just like him. “This is fantastic.” She hugged Roger, assaulting the dog with a messy kiss of her own while Wendy chuckled.
“Did you still want the water?” It was easy to picture their throat being somewhat sore from the contortion of its new canine shape.
“Rhg, thank you.” She took the cup, putting it up to her lips before quickly spilling all the water out from the girth of her tongue forced into a small shape. “FPphfuck.”
“O-oh, I’m so sorry miss. Here, let me get you something better.” Hiding the wet patch on her skirt from the spilled water, Wendy briskly scoured through the shelter’s supply closet. “Here!” She shook a bright red plastic doggy bowl and filled it with water from the nearby water cooler.
“Oooh, thank you.” Mervia really was feeling thirsty for a drink, brushing over her ears. “You can just put it on the ground.”
“Uh, are you sure?” Wendy didn’t want to disgrace the customer by treating them like that much of an animal, but Mervia had already gotten to her knees before there could be any objections. “Here.” She set it on the floor, reaching out to push back Roger as the dog casually walked forward to take a drink alongside her.
“Mmh.” Pulling her hair back, Mervia dipped her snout into the doggy bowl, letting her tongue extend to its fullest and lap at the water. She was certainly a natural at this too, splashing water all over her chest and cheeks with each hearty lick. A wide wipe over her chops cleaned up the stray spit. “Oh let him drink too.” Mervia snorted to see Wendy still struggling to hold Roger back. “His mouth can’t be any dirtier than mine.”
“Fine…” Wendy let her hold slip, watching with a sigh as Roger began sharing the water bowl with his owner. As Mervia bent forward on all fours, a small growth lifted itself out from her tailbone, wiggling free from her pants just as eagerly as the woman drank. “Oh, a tail too?” It wasn’t everyone who got a tail as part of their changes, and this was no mere skin nub that Wendy had seen plenty of. The furry thing curled over Mervia’s back in a half C, working into a wagging motion independent of the trainer’s bouncing waist. Wendy just couldn’t help herself but to reach out and grab it between her thumb and forefinger.
“Yiiep!” Mervia let out a sharp yip, slapping a hand over her butt and making Wendy draw back.
“S-sorry, I didn’t mean to pull it, I just wanted to pet…”
“Oh, n-no its fine I just…” She put own arm down to her elbow to look back behind her ass. “I was just surprised is all, but I’d felt something moving back there!” As soon as both women set their attention on the tail, it seemed to slow its swishing. “Uh, you can pet me by the way… I was enjoying it earlier.”
“I… uh…” Wendy gulped, flicking the back of her hand over the tail, this time with more caution. “Is that good? How does it feel?”
“Rrhhg, gooood. It’s not as weird as my face, I mean my muzzle. I guess just kinda like, if my spine had some extra room to grow? Hard to describe… hhh but I love when you do that, fuck yeah, right there!” Wendy has turned to lightly scratching over Mervia’s hindquarters. When her nails dug in deeper, Mervia beat her leg against the ground in unrestrained glee.
“Woof!” Roger barked again, trying to push his nose into Wendy’s hand and steal her scratches.
“Oh you’ll get your turn, come on!”
“Hehe, you’re both so cute.” Wendy giggled, then slapping over her cheek. “Shoot, miss you said you only had ten minutes. I don’t want you to miss your next appointment or wherever you need to be.”
“Ah shit you’re right.” Groaning at the annoyance of rising back to two legs, Mervia pulled herself up and felt Roger’s head brushing against her sides. “Dammit, I wanted that picture too.”
“Next time miss. The photographer will be back on Wednesday. I hope you have a nice rest of your day!” She moved to get the door for the dog faced woman and her new companion.
“Thanks!” Roger ran for the car, Mervia walking fast behind him. She paused at the door, then with a quick tip of her snout, planted a surprise sloppy wet kiss right onto Wendy’s scrunched nose. “Hehee, you too, right? Catch you in the dog park, someday.” After one last wave, she left Wendy with a face covered in watery slobber and a deep blush.
