Description Another concept for the SDL tabletop game being developed at the moment. This is originally rendered by from the homebrew visualizations of .

The original concept had slightly longer limbs and claws were more noticeable. I changed that i bit here with to make way for a longer sword. I figured his long limbs will just be in the way when swinging a ridiculously long blade, plus it makes more sense since if you had short limbs, you'd want to compensate with a long katana. Also made the bandages more lose for aesthetics.

More bambooness for you all. Done in traditional pencilling, no inking and photoshoped the edges and the tones and shade. 3 hours more or less, had it started this weekend.

UPDATE: Haha! Fixed that floating sword problem. The limbs still look short though. Will just make-up for it in our comics when he debuts.

And to those commenting, yes Sephiroth was the inspiration for the long katana. Now how to withdraw that sword is up for debate. I say swing the bamboo sheath while holding edge reversed handed. Go figure! XD

Name: Shinohai
Weapons & Equipment: Shinja
Style: Mukankaku
Sponsors: Self Sponsored
Height: 5’ 7”
Weight: 156 Lbs
Backstory:

Shinohai was born and raised in a small farming village outside Midoriiro Kawa city. The village was plagued by bandits and rogue samurai. Under the constant strain of extortions, rapes, and murders, the villagers decided to hire samurai to protect them.
This angered the bandit warlord Hideo Watnabe, he encircled the village with over 300 men and killed every man, woman and child and burned the village to the ground. Shinohai was the only survivor. He was found by Mamoru a hermit who lived in the swamps.

Mamoru nursed the young boy back to health but he had suffered an injury that left his nervous system “lacking”… he couldn’t feel pain. Broken bones, cuts, the crack of a cane across his head… nothing hurt him. Mamoru was a blacksmith and a master swordsman, he trained Shinohai in the way of the Sword and created the Nodachi “Shinja” for him. Shinja gave Shinohai an edge…he could strike a foe at distances as far away as a spearman and still deliver a lethal blow even if face to face.

Mamoru knew in his heart the Shinohai would leave him seeking vengeance for his people… all those lost souls haunted Shinohai, crying out for vengeance. The old swamp hermit Mamoru had as much gold as any Shogun and gifted Shinohai a small fortune to fund his operation. Shinohai set off to Midoriiro Kawa city to search for clues…all trails led him to the S.D.L. and the S.D.L has led him from one end of the country to the next. Many of the bandits responsible have fallen under Shinja but Hideo Watnabe remains elusive.

Trans key:
Shinohai (atomic dust, lethal fallout)
Shinja (sacred snake)
Mukankaku (impervious)
Midoriiro Kawa (Green River)

awww that kinda sucks, especially since you've called it an SDL tabletop game. I thought the SDL was all about the community? >_>

SDL is a brand name owned by 2 persons in particular. Inevitably, SDL, due to laws and legal issues will be limited to these 2 individuals when it comes to the right in bearing its name. 5deadly chose to avoid all the legal weight and opted to commission one of SDL's founders rather than signing a significant amount of people in a business gamble that is not sure to produce the aimed fruits commercial wise. It's a decision, ultimately based on SDL current structure. It may have been different if SDL was a registered company in the beginning.

Right, right.... still, I was thinking it was perhaps like what you were saying the published manga would be like: people's characters show up occasionally in it but they don't get any profits or anything, it's just for the awesomeness of being involved. I personally would love to have Maim Taichou as a guy in your tabletop game even if I don't call any of the shots or get any cash or whatever. The main thing is just being able to contribute and getting some exposure, you know? Well, as long as I retain rights to Maim, I mean. Nothing would be worse than losing your own characters...

actually we considered that too. Its just that we failed to make a contract that would satisfy both parties and eliminate legal loopholes and what not. Its a possibility in the horizon.

there is definitely something to be said about the use of bandages. I love them. They show a lot of effort and when they are done right they give you a great effect. They allow for a lot of action.

Crusader13 [2008-06-03 22:04:07 +0000 UTC]

This one kicks ass! But in reality you need long limbs, to use a long weapon like that, its not for compensating the shortnes of the arms. If your lims are short, the long grip will be in the way, and if you are short, than the grund will be in the way for the blade. I know this cause i practice medieval european marsal arts, and i use a twohander (about 5'7" long) myself, and my limbs are nice and long (im about 6'2"), but its still pretty hard to use it. Short guys use spears, or maybe halberds.
The bandages are sweet <3.

RoninsUltramix In reply to Crusader13 [2008-06-04 14:49:45 +0000 UTC]

Long limbs are not needed with handling Japaneses blades and katanas. Broadswords are meant to be used with brute force in mind while katanas are made to be used with speed, precision and finesse. Most Asians have shorter limbs compared to Caucasians proportionately longer limbs. Also a skilled swordsman is able to use his hands and arms as leverages in battle, making short limbs effective. Another fundamental difference is the way a katana's slicing motion compared to a halberd . A katana is meant to slice and slash along its curvature and meant to use with proper upper body swing and posture, unlike broadswords that uses a lateral swing action across its edge.

Above all, i never meant to stick religiously to reality, otherwise, where's the fun in all that eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Crusader13 In reply to RoninsUltramix [2008-06-04 18:04:45 +0000 UTC]

Your right, sticking to reality can kill the fun, and the use of katana is differentfrom european swords, and japanese people are shorter than european people. But thats not a katana, thats a zanbato. This sword has been used by two guys at the same time, but not because its heavy (its mass is about the half of a european sword with the same lenght), but because its 6'-long. The proper coordination is the hardest thing to master, in the use of a twohander. And you cant swiftly unsheath a sword this long, you simply go to battle with an unsheathed sword.
ps.: After all i still think this drawing kicks ass big time, and i dont say its impossible to use a twohander withs short limbs, i just say its harder. And sorry for whyning about unnecessary stuff, i just wanted to say something useful.

My suggestion for drawing the sword from the sheath is to split the sheath about 3-4 feet from the bottom (if the sheath is standing on end with the handle on top). It's an idea I came up with for one of my characters who uses a long katana. This way he would start to draw it like a normal sword them he would swing it the rest of the way out of the sheath. This allows him to have an element of suprise with his attack and speed with it. Hope this helps, later. ^_^

Fact-N-Fiction [2008-06-03 19:08:05 +0000 UTC]

This is only a suggestion on how he could draw the sword and I am only speculating, but he could, and because I know nothing about this character. Could be acrobatic and good in Hand-to-hand, and use momentum to throw the sword up into the air, or just throw it into the air, then start an assult of blows on whom ever and use timing to grab it.... but that is only a theory and not to be taken to heart, but I believe you understand that ^__^.

Now ont he the charcter itself, I think it looks amazing, I am a fan of the bandages on people. Though they may server no purpose r may cover up some kind of huge tattoo or horrific skin damage I still love it, and I love the claws on his hands, which gave me the idea that he would be good in hand-to-hand. All in all he looks sweet, and he gives off that "Bad guy" aura... if you know what I mean, again you more than likly do

Dieman In reply to Fact-N-Fiction [2008-06-04 07:25:26 +0000 UTC]

The badguy aura is mostly a trick the mind plays on you when you can't see the eyes. People tend to think it's ominous. I personally think he looks a bit like V from V For Vendetta, the way his face looks. Also, I want him to fight my Maim Taichou, as soon as I get him finished that is. =3=

Fact-N-Fiction In reply to Dieman [2008-06-04 19:49:42 +0000 UTC]

yea I see what you are saying but I would also draw my "evil aura" feeling from the bandages. It makes me think of Shishio from Rurouni Kenshin. In the same sense I think about Kurosaki Ichigo in bandages and that gives me the thought of a renagade, not bad, but not good in the same sense a Vigilante

I think we can agree that bandages are inherently badass. That's why I love putting them on my renegade anti-heroes. People love them (whether they know it or not) because of the bandagery.
