Seb and Gregor- back in 9th grade, when I had a hard time finding friends I could count on and used to spend my days being home alone, my mum gave me a card for my birthday with this quote on it: "Good friends are like stars - you don't always see them, but you know they are always there." (unknown author). I had it on my wall and it gave me a comforting feeling whenever I looked at it. somehow I knew that one day, that quote would be true.
exactly five years later I was sitting on the wall of a ruin on top of a hill in the middle of the night, surrounded by my friends, to party into my birthday. and suddenly I remembered that quote. and I realized that it had become true. in that moment, some of my friends were present and others weren't, but I knew that all of them would always be there for me, whether I could see them or not. I took this photograph just before we left, without second thoughts, and forgot about it until I got my films developed. it wasn't until now that I realized how well all that would go together.

That’s a very interesting quote, I think that friends are like stars also in the sense that finding true friends is like trying to catch a shooting star. The effect of the scanner causing the “stars” is certainly a great one, it gives an amazing sense depth to the image that evokes an immensely strong focus on the flame in the center of the image. It seems almost as though your friends are floating in space. But as I look at it, in a way I would say that they really are in a sense. These moments, existing in a place beyond normal reason, where base humans emotions are lost, or surpassed and vanquished by higher and simpler ones. A pure instant where existence is validated merely by it’s own being, heavy burdens and cares forgotten. Even if perhaps one doesn’t realize it till long after. That’s what I see in this image and story, and it’s quite amazing.

I'm glad everything worked out for you in the end. I used to feel the same way about finding good friends, and about a year and a half ago I met a group of people who are now closer to me than anything. We don't get to see each other a lot because of school and work now, but just like you and your friends, that quote holds true for us =] Lovely photograph, I love capturing moments that mean a lot to me like this. Your work really inspires me to do that
