Rango is probably going to be the oddest film to be released this year, but it’s such wonderful fare that I can only look at its oddness with affection. Depp’s performance as Lars/Rango is top notch, and the animation is quite beautifully done. Industrial Light and Magic did a terrific job here, and while the characters are quite gruesome and ugly, they work in the harsh backdrop so well, and serve to create dingier amalgam of critters in the town of Dirt. The filmmakers were keen on steering clear from overdosing this film with fart jokes, but more importantly, played a very good balance between the obvious nods to westerns, touches of surrealism and maintaining a firm narrative. I was so-so when I saw the previews, and this film greatly exceeded my expectations.
