Description A powerful being stricken with amnesia, Titan is the sworn protector of Earth- whether it likes it or not.  Titan will punish any evil doer who crosses his path, using his powers of flight, super-strength, invulnerability, and the ability to fire blasts of powerful plasmic energy from his eyes and hands, all the while searching for the truth to his origins and his incredible powers.

The 90's were an odd time.  There seemed to be an attempt to go against the grain of all the heroes who came before.  Yet at the same time, it seemed there were always new attempts to do Superman, but more EXTREME!!! And AWESOME!!!  With COOLER POWERS!  Icon, Supreme, Prime, Mr. Majestic.  At the same time people were rejecting Superman, people were falling over themselves to try and do him in a "cooler" way.

Titan is my little stab at that concept.  He has some of the typical Liefeldian traits such as the giant chest, gaunt cheekbones and giant shoulderpads.  He's also got the "Mysterious origin" that WAY too many heroes had during that time (Guess it made it easier to come up with an origin if you didn't have to worry about the specifics) and a bunch of generic "flying brick" powers coupled with POWER BLASTS to make him "cooler."  I also tried to make his anatomy as HORRIBLE as possible.  No joke, I actually had to TRY and draw his feet in a horrible way, as my attempts were far too good.  And I don't consider myself that good of an artist.  And even I knew how to do basic tenants of anatomy better than a lot of artists back then.

Another aspect that I found is that in an attempt to get away with the standard conventions of previous superheroes, the artists inevitably backed themselves into a corner.  There seemed to be a rejection of standard superhero designs, such as things like chest symbols or easily identifiable icons or materials.  Gloves gave way to gauntlets, boots were done away with altogether.  But that also had the problem of not providing enough color separation on the body of the characters.  Which is why you saw a lot of bizarre design choices on the characters costumes, mostly from those designed by Rob Liefeld.  The costume designs made little to no sense, but seemed to be just there to keep the costume from looking like one big block of color.  That's why I had the strange designs on Titan's bodysuit- they are just there to break up the costume, rather than make any design sense.

Reminds me of the Eradicator, a DC hero/anti-hero/vigilante who, IIRC, first appeared during Reign of the Supermen.

I was going for more "Supreme" or "Prime" type heroes from that era, with their "Superman with attitude!" style of approach for their designs.

He is beautifully grotesque, or perhaps hideously beautiful.

Either way, he is the epitome of 90s and I absolutely love him. Magnificent distillation and combination of elements. You hit the nail on the head with the whole, "Energy blasts = cooler" aspect. I can't even remember how many snarling dudes in leotards were plastered on comic covers and splash pages with their hands glowing for no apparent reason.

Eh, enough rambling. Well done, sir. Well done.

He is cool, though.

Did you know there was a Superman character over at Dark Horse in the 90s named Titan? He spun out of the Comics' Greatest World series. Take a look at him here www.comicvine.com/titan/4005-4… The recent revamp of the CWG characters in Catalyst Comix was cool, though I have to admit I enjoy the 90s stuff as well.
