Description The third and final aircraft carrier in the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) was the Majestic-class HMCS Bonaventure (CVL-22) which was designed for the Royal Navy as HMS Powerful during World War II and built by Harland & Wolff of Belfast.  With the war ending, the need for new carriers decreased and the UK let her hull sit in the shipyard until her acquisition by the RCN in 1952.  HMCS Bonaventure served from 1957 to 1970, mostly aiding NATO and NORAD in anti-submarine patrols and various international military exercises, and ended her career under Canadian Armed Forces command following the military unification of 1968.  With her decommissioning and later sale to a Taiwanese scrapyard, and the transfer of all military aircraft to Air Command, Canadian naval aviation ceased to exist until RCN warships began carrying drones in the early 21st century.  A 1/144 scale model of HMCS Bonaventure carrying McDonnell F2H Banshee fighters, Sikorsky CH-124 Sea King helicopters, and Grumman CP-121 Tracker patrol planes is displayed at the Canada Aviation and Space Museum in Ottawa.
