Description Nihon Aircraft Manufacturing Company (NAMC) YS-11A twin turboprop airliner JA8731 is parked in front of the Kakamigahara Aerospace Science Museum in Gifu Prefecture.  It is displayed as a YS-11A-500R short-range airliner of its last owner, Air Nippon (ANK), which was absorbed by its owner All Nippon Airways (ANA).  The YS-11 did not sell as well as other Douglas DC-3 replacements, with only 182 planes sold, and was retired when airlines felt it would be too expensive to refit the planes to comply with a Japanese government requirement for TCAS.  This was Japan's last domestically-built commercial airliner for decades, and the Japanese aviation industry is now counting on the success of the Mitsubishi Regional Jet (MRJ) against stiff international competition.

Jiro Hirokoshi's last successful design.  I like this one better.
