This picture is related to my other oil painting, "Guerra de Canudos" ie the tragic war of Canudos in Brazil during the late 1890's. One of the definitive textbooks about the war was called "Os Sertões", written by Euclides da Cunha (here depicted right foreground).

He spent three weeks at the site of the conflict as a correspondent of the newspaper 'O Estado de São Paulo' and, in his book, basically denounced the massacre as a step back into barbarism. Three soldiers of the 1st Republic are also shown, the city of Belo Monte in the background.
